The part that I always find myself tripping out on the most, is how easily I can be humbled by events that have absolutely nothing to do with me - things that shake up my friends (or even people I have never met) seem to widen my gaze more often than not.
I'm with you on the idea of using knowledge/wisdom such as this as an attitudinal barometer for art, science, and what-have-you. Almost all of the my own personal philosophies have become a hodge-podge of similar ideas pertaining to old-school thought like this.
That being said, I'm certainly NOT playing a game of King-Of-The-Mountain*. My mountain is my mountain. Obviously - I am already The King of IT. ;)
*Unless of course someone wants to come and try to climb my mountain, which would be silly - everyone has their own mountain to explore.
