But think of all the kids who haven't bought books yet. Don't they deserve the most state-of-the-art gaming system the industry can provide? We must think of the children...

...Not that I don't understand your point of view.

Oh, lord, please, don't even talk to me about ancient D&D books. Like those first edition DM's guide and Deities and Demigods, etc. etc.

Yikes, I think you're right.

Man, I thought they'd at least give the system two more years, but you can always rely on Hasbro to go for the bucks.

Those books of yours will probably be worth something for a little while; chances are this is an announcement of the products release at next year's Gen Con. It's what they did with 3rd.

YES! MUST GAME! (Though I think I'm now on FG2, will that complicate things? I'm not sure the two versions can talk to each other)

I'm pretty sure the Rules Compendium is still forthcoming. All the advance word I'm hearing is May 2008 before the new PHB hits shelves. The Rules Compendium is, I suspect, to be the sort of "Final Word" on the 3.5 rules, before they're put into semi-retirement.

I'm very very curious to see what effect this will all have on the 3.5 OGL market. The OGL won't be going away, as it can't. And I suspect people will still be playing 3.5 long after 4.0 is released. Hell, there are people still playing 1st and 2nd eds now, though each new edition effectively killed the previous one. The difference this time is, of course, the OGL.
