The Wire just gets better. The writing and acting are good for the entire run and it is much more than just a police procedural show... you get a first hand look at inner city schools, politics, unions, and the media as well. I can't recommend it enough.
Read "The Corner" by David Simon which is the book the series is based on, much the same way his book "Homicide" was the basis for, well, "Homicide." It's tough bleak but interesting reading.
FWIW, a cousin of nav's, who was a cop in a tough area of Miami, and now in the FBI, said that everybody he knew (cops, lawyers, etc) involved in drug-related policing said that the show depicted their reality in a way that showed they really did their homework.
I'm going to disagree with everyone so far. I think Supernatural has definitely had some unfortunate hiccups, but on the whole the show has just gotten better. I like the running plot arch (though I do miss some of the more creative "monster of the week" episodes), and I think the acting has improved.
But then again, I didn't think either the writing or the acting were mediocre during season one, so take that for what you will.
I love your icon...very funny. I don't think everyone's acting was mediocre, but Sammy's was bad enough to drag down the average for me and K. Something about him just didn't resonate with us, I guess--there was a streak in the last third of the first season in which the character actors in the monster of the week episodes were just so much more compelling than the cast that we really ended up getting pushed out of the show--that was sort of the breaking point for us, I think.
Supernatural seems made for me, blue collar brothers hunt monsters, but I found it so uncompelling that I stopped wasting my time on it during series one.
