Don't Get Mad, Get Even

Unlike my other band mates, I'm not as upset about what happened at the Rock Band competition. There were four bands who were hotly contested (sorry to the other two, but you guys didn't have the fire, you know what I mean?), and only three of the were going to place. We were the ones who didn't ( Read more... )

Why are there always mystery songs?

I didn't even think to question that...

Is it an attempt to level the playing field? Does the field need to be leveled? I like how the judges were not lenient AT ALL on the mystery songs, treating the band as if they blew something they'd practiced.

The whole point of doing mystery songs is to see what happens when a band is under pressure and performing something they having practiced dozens of times. If the bands are playing the same mystery song (head to head and everyone is playing say, Carry on Wayward Son), it will give you a damn good idea of who's the best band because everyone has the same standard to live up to.

I might be able to accept that if the scoring for this competition had been more concerned with technical scores. Since judges' scores made up 75% of the total, that means it became far more important to look good than to play well. The singer always gets it the worst because (s)he has to know melody, rhythm, and to some extent the lyrics. By comparison, the three other band members only have to worry about five digital colored buttons; it's a lot less obvious when they mess those up, so they can largely fake it. But the singer? It's going to be painfully obvious -- as we saw -- when (s)he doesn't know the song ( ... )

I'm totally interested in your RB competition (and would wager the Phones would be interested in competing instead of running the show for once!)

I have Ship & Wife on my XBL list... what are the rest your gamertags? mine is ijs3321.

OH DEAR.

I'm SeanOrange (pretty consistent that way). Which one are you, um, assfingers?

I realize that this whole post came off WAY more harsh than I intended (especially after saying I wasn't going to be harsh). And it's not like the Geek.Kon contest will be flawless. Rock Band competitions are still an evolving form, given all the variables that can arise and need to be accounted for. We can all keep learning from each other -- which is one of the reasons I wanted to be involved, aside from the fun of performing.
