In my history class on success and failure in America, there's a pretty big socialist sitting right behind me. He actually said, "No offense to you, but libertarianism is dead--look how it lead up to the Gilded Age with big business run amuck--" which completely ignores the complicity of government in enabling such businesses in getting so much power. Seriously, it makes me want to claw my eyes out.
For that class, I'm writing a 15 page paper defending libertarianism and pitting Friedman's Free to Choose against Barbara Ehrenreich's Nickel and Dimed. I'm also using Boaz's Primer and considering about using Harry Browne's book Why Government Doesn't Work, but he comes off as too much of a sleazy loan shark to me.
Cool--although that book won't arrive on time for my paper.
Still, I am looking at building a library of libertarian-themed books. Probably very one-sided and hyperpartisan of me, but I am sick and tired of listening to leftist, anticapitalist drivel without a good response ready.

If you want to embarrass this guy and specifically address his claim in your paper, try this book: The Myth of the Robber Barons
