A quick roundup of the last two years is over at lookathing.

It's what I will consider the first day of videoblogging week. The technical snafus are there because I want to do everything for free.

I graduated college in the winter '06
woulda been sooner if not for laziness
got a degree in english, i wrote some poems
then i traveled to the danger zone

took a little while 'fore I came to grips
- college grad deliverin' chinese food for tips
took a vacation, took a train out west
and began the mental part of my ultimate quest

spent my summer savin' dough, workin' on the d-low
movin' real slow, goin toe-to-toe
with my fear of adventure, my lack of self worth
eventually though mama iowa gave birth

to a renegade drivin a saturn to C-A
with my bike strapped on back all the way
I-80? shit it was my parade,
moonlit salt flats, shit, my mem'ry fades

so I land in parkin' lot in the mission dis-trict
youth hostel kickin out shitty free breakfast
every morning, stale pastries, vonnegut and coffee
riding in to work on my dirty 14-speed

one week in, I'm startin' my job
knocking on your door and tellin you you are a slob
for not givin money to charity
I gotta keep my face straight, that's a priority

Doin' fine with my job, but can't find an apartment
boss says "live with me, you don't have to pay rent"
gotta shower at the gym, but that's okay
I am kicking it out the san francisco way (babay babay)

drinkin in allies with my friend cassie
Let me tell you how much she impressed me
passing long weeknights beating jokers at pool
I'm standing around makin sure no one acts a fool

but then I do, in the ocean i'm pissin'
off the pier where some dudes are crab fishin'
or something like that, the timeline's mixed
and it's memories like this that don't remain fixed

I put myself out there for others to judge
after seven weeks the housing market fin'ly budged
moved to a purple co-op with sexagenarians
spent the occasional evening chillin in the hot tub

there was thanksgiving with a friendship delight
then there were fireworks on new year's night
things got kinda normal, yeah they got real sane
and one day geoff and susan came

shit got crazy, the party got rocked
drinking margaritas* at the top of the mariott
lookin at my foggy city, so hard to believe
... just so hard to believe

San Francisco, spent seven months there
never so much as got tangled in some girls hair
susan quesal comes to town and tells my friend nick
you're pretty awesome, let's fall in love quick

then march rolls 'round, and wouldn't you know it
this joker right here is in line for a promotion
they call me on the phone and tell me at the end of april
there are some complicated duties they need me to fulfill

then one week later, I got the pressure on
seems like I can't milk a dollar from anyone
job's on the rocks, looks like my caboose is cooked
but at the last minute we figured out the books

so I packed up my stuff & then mom and dad
came to san francisco to help me clean out my pad
drive two thousand miles, then a couple thousand more
just to make sure all my junk is stored

and then I'm on a flight - overnight
touchdown in DC to get my training tight
gotta start an office, gotta raise some funds
so progressive organizations can continue to run

Ann Arbor in may, we hit the streets
Anne Ebbers, five dudes and me
knockin' on doors to tell you & yours
guantanamo bay has got to be closed

forty sixty eighty ninety hours a week
we work so hard that we forget how to sleep
someone gets sick, someone shows up new
there are too many stories, and I'm telling so few

every weekend, yeah, we tear it up
dealin' with stress, we got to share it up
ruthie writes poems so strong and true
my notebook stands empty, my notes are few

then megan and amelia, will and joe and matt
plenty other players who kept reminding me that
there's no such thing as power, it's a matter of the mind
you got to keep it real, ego tripping is a crime

things get blurry at the end of summer
you say some goodbyes and begin to wunnder
if everytihng keeps moving with such momentum
if you say i love yous, make sure that you meant 'em

when the lease was up, I moved to motel six
dealin' really well with bureaucratic bullshit
we registered more voters than MC's have got rhymes
mccain withdrew from michigan in no time

livin with sarah chalmers above a couple's garage
you got so sick life was like a mirage
that you couldn't escape, that you couldn't sleep off
but you stuck it out so many days without so much as a cough

I'm amazed by the goodness of the people I knew
as much as by the goneness of those days as they flew

y'all the shit hit the FAN one early mor-NAN
got one hour of sleep before the caravan
gotta hone our skills, gotta keep it real
drivin' to columbus in the hilarymobile

training was outta control yeah I didn't understand
why everyone was frantic, even sue moran
gotta put the lists together through the changing tides
then just fuck all the planning, send us to Denver, a'ight?!

everyone else was gone, it was our celebration night
but then we got too drunk and we missed our flight
there was another one just an hour away
me, corrin and maria laughin the blues away

One month 'til election, got republicans to defeat
kickin it at the HoJo in the governor's suite
then my craigslist ad got answered, and my heart soared
it was an invitation from my girl gail devore

air mattresses in the basement, costco muffins by the score
a sweet face, two dogs, who could ask for more?
platonic snuggling made the days easier to bear
but really we just passed out & laid there

ninety then a hundred, one-ten hours a week
we're canvassing so much that people start to seek
ways out of their responsibilities
'cause whatever effect we havin' we sure as hell can't see

caffeine and alcohol were a constant loop
as the masses swelled and soared on our building's stoop
we're advertisin' jobs to elect barack obama, y'all
and we're also tellin you to vote for mark udall

spent my mornings making maps, so i was slow to react
til that coffee hit my veins, then up my head would snap
pushin hard into the night, never forgettin' how to flow
rental cars jammin satellite radio

i fit a year's worth of livin into the month of october
at the end of that shit, you know i'm not gonna be sober
then obama won early, and the moment that everyone else knew this
i was alone at a japanese restaurant buyin' udon noodles.

but i joined the celebration
for our country's maturation
we glowed in the elegance of a nation that's wise
the experience was heady
for the rest of my life, i was ready
and I'm sure that month peeled off years from the end of my life

but that's all right

Now I'm living in Chicago, where the rappers meet
workin from home like twenty-five hours a week
my prospects are many, the friends are tight
i hope this song could catch you up on my life is night.

* martinis, not margaritas.
