history:
Dr. Noboru Ijyuuin, or "Bokuchan" ("little brother", his nickname in the surgical staff) starts the series as a frustrated, angry intern at Meishin University Hospital. Forced to constantly choose between the politics of the medical community and his own desire to help patients, dilemmas of conscience have overwhelmed his life. Then Dr. Asada shows up and asks the blossoming young doctor to join "Team Dragon", a Batista heart surgery specialty team. Asada wishes to see Ijyuuin succeed and not become jaded, unlike his colleagues.
Team Dragon is comprised of the most skilled doctors and nurses in the hospital: Miki, a friend of Asada's; Dr. Kato, a surgeon from Meishin who is turned from her jaded ways through Asada's influence; Dr. Fujiyoshi, an internal medicine specialist; and Dr. Arase, an anesthesia addict who can put anyone to sleep in seven seconds. All of these people are transformed into a perfectly synchronized team to perform difficult heart surgeries. Though each has their own character flaws, Asada brings out the best in each of them. They learn from each other, saving many lives, and shaping their professional futures apart from the corruption that surrounds them.
After learning Dr. Asada's ways and methods, growing along with Team Dragon, Ijyuuin throws himself back into studying and is careful to make as much effort as he can to help his patients. Despite setbacks and disbanding and reformation of Team Dragon, Ijyuuin manages to learn vital skills and become a reliable surgical assistant. Still, he feels insignificant and unappreciated at times, so he defects to grow under rival doctor Kirishima's surgical ambitions. His schemes to destroy Team Dragon are thwarted by Ijyuuin leaving Kirishima's team and returning to Asada's side.
Corrupt hospital officials split the team again, sending Ijyuuin and Asada off to another hospital, where Ijyuuin is not only put-down and bullied by fellow doctors, but openly discouraged from trying to advance his skills. As the other doctors come around, he struggles to find an identity within the system, and to become more than simply an assistant. In the end, his stalwart support of others keeps him labeled a capable assistant in surgery, but little more.
In series three, his dissatisfaction rears its head again when, after two more years at Meishin without Asada, he grows weary of his support role. Eager to learn more and be a surgical genius, he joins the team of catheter specialist Kuroki, bitterly leaving Team Dragon for the last time. Here, he learns valuable techniques and is constantly praised by Kuroki. There are machinations afoot to tear Team Dragon apart by making them appear obsolete, but in the end every crisis brings them back together. Ijyuuin has a crowning moment where he repairs the heart of Asada himself, restoring his confidence in both the team and his own abilities.
In the end, Asada leaves the team once more, and Ijyuuin remains a capable surgical assistant, while also becoming the apparent lead of the catheter specialization.
personality:
The first thing one might notice about Dr. Ijyuuin is that he's... well, cute. He seems the meek, quiet sort, the type to smile easily and frown just as easily, and he is that and more. On the outside, he can be truly cheerful and optimistic. Children and elderly patients bring out the best in him, and he'll spend vast amounts of time speaking with them and playing games with children. He also enjoys childish pleasures, like popsicles and listening to his colleagues tell jokes.
However, underneath the cuter exterior, there are moments of darkness. There's a bare honesty about his moods, as they stay close to the surface, so it's obvious when he's displeased. When he is unhappy, he's completely unpleasant. This can range from drunken insults to quiet grumblings, and even extend so far as a brief yelling match if he's challenged. This is especially evident when he confronts anesthesiologist Arase, who not only gets high off anesthesia medicines, but is an alcoholic. Ijyuuin tears him down, calling him a a monster, essentially, and shows no remorse for it even later. He also grumbles about being made fun of by nurses and other doctors.
And he seems an easy target for mocking, since he responds so readily. In fact, the combination of his youthful cuteness and his petulant attitude garnered him the nickname "Bokuchan", which loosely translates to "little brother". Beyond that, though, others do often doubt his abilities, both in surgery and in his ability to cope with situations. He has a vulnerability and is easy to rile, and goes so far as to go sit beside a comatose patient and vent his worries aloud to circumvent his associates. This changes over the course of the series, and he becomes more able to confront people directly, but his irritation is never well-hidden.
Easily picked on by other doctors, he also easily becomes disheartened. When other surgeons look down on him, he is crushed, and angered. He is told repeatedly that he cannot live up to expectations--his own or those of others--and when he is finally shouldered with major surgeries, his lack of confidence sabotages him. However, recently he's begun to develop a sense of pride beyond just the work of Team Dragon, and has completed many surgeries on his own. In fact, his skill and quick thinking (after great reluctance) saved Dr. Asada's life.
Despite his lack of confidence and the ease with which he gets discouraged, he tries very hard and goes the extra mile to help anyone he needs to. He studies until he falls asleep, practices before every surgery tirelessly, and is certain to do whatever he can to help the patients he works on, and even those he simply assists in the surgeries for. Eventually, this pays off for him. Though he does it for a callous reason, his desire to learn makes him the hospital's catheter specialist, able to assist in more surgeries and to lead many of his own.
Though sometimes harsh, Ijyuuin always comes through for people when he's most needed. He's done miraculous surgeries, delivered a transplant organ on foot, and saved a woman from certain death in the parking lot of a convenience store. When truly pressed, his better virtues shine through, and he is a good man when all is said and done. He may worry, but his confidence surges with the support of others. He may become embittered, but he'll cling to hope when it can be seen.
abilities/powers: Well. I mean. He's a heart surgeon, and he can do certain other internal organ surgeries with study. He does study an AWFUL LOT, too. He has general medical skills from working as an ER doctor, and is a skilled arterial catheter specialist. I believe he also knows how to ride a moped or scooter.

[The phone is set neatly on a desk, and the man in glasses looks as tired as ever. Still, he's trying to take care of himself and everyone else.]
I know I keep asking for help... It's not like I'm incompetent, I just can't get around some of these things. Sanitizing the space and doing field work... might be necessary, you know? I guess we have to think of how to do that...
Anyone know? I don't know what all the supplies are that are available.
But... listen. We can do this. So if anyone can find the sanitizing materials, I'll be grateful.
Let's... let's work together, okay? [Juuust a little smile.]

A D_M post. third person sample:
In the darkness, he wandered the street alone. He was looking for somewhere to decompress, somewhere to get over the feelings that churned his stomach. Tears threatened to fall, and he gripped his sleeves tightly. How dare anyone call him useless? How dare they accuse him of not looking after a patient's best interests?
He knew what he was doing. He'd seen Dr Asada do it before. He knew it would work, but someone had to claim to know better.
Taking a seat, he held his head in his hands. What could he do here, alone, without his team to back him up? The team could function without one of its members, but could one member function without the team?
It seemed impossible. Even if he conjured up all his strength, how could he stand against a room of people saying they knew better than he did. Even without the proper tools, he knew the patient could be saved. Why was everyone else giving up?
Removing shards of glass wasn't as difficult as heart surgery, not by a long shot. They would stand there and watch someone die, and all he managed to do was argue. His fingers crept to the back of his head and he doubled over, sighing. Someday. Someday they'd remember what he said, and they'd remember he was right.
Maybe then he'd get some respect.
