[ History ] :
Once upon a time there was a boy called Sora who had the power to wield the Keyblade. And after his home was taken by darkness, Sora went looking for his two best friends, Riku and Kairi, who had also been scattered onto other worlds when their home was destroyed. But when he finally found Kairi, Sora discovered that her heart was missing. Only since Kairi had no darkness in her heart, instead of becoming a Heartless, her heart fled to the safest place it could - namely, inside Sora's. The only way for Kairi's heart to return to her body was for Sora to stab his own heart with a Keyblade.

And so he did.

Enter Roxas, stage left.

Roxas is Sora's Nobody - a being created when a person becomes a Heartless. However, as Sora's heart was restored almost as soon as he had become a Heartless, Roxas was left with no memories of being Sora - and this was how the Organisation, a group of powerful Nobodies working to regain their lost hearts, found him.

For the whole of his first week as a Nobody, Roxas was more or less lifeless, barely able to string a sentence together. But as he began to work with other members of the Organisation, he began to come out of his shell a little more, developing his own personality. During these first few days, Roxas befriended Axel, a fellow member of the Organisation, and a long-standing tradition of sea salt ice cream on Twilight Town's clock tower after work was born.

After Axel was sent to Castle Oblivion on a top-secret mission, Roxas started to become closer to the mysterious fourteenth member of the Organisation, a young girl called Xion. At first Xion barely spoke or took off her hood, but as she and Roxas grew closer, it turned out that she was also able to use the Keyblade. After a mission in Agrabah, Roxas collapsed and was in a deep sleep for several weeks. When he finally woke up, he discovered that Xion had been leaving seashells by his pillow every day - one for every day that he was asleep.

The day after Roxas woke up, he discovered that the entire team sent to Castle Oblivion had been annihilated - apparently including Axel. On top of having to deal with what he thought was the loss of his friend, Roxas was also beginning to have strange visions of a boy in red who seemed to have been to all the worlds Roxas was visiting on missions.

The days went by as they always did - missions off-world during the day, and sitting up on the clock tower alone in the evening. One evening, Axel showed up suddenly, apparently completely alive and well, although Roxas noted that Axel seemed different since he'd gotten back.

With Axel back, though, Xion had now gone missing. Roxas teamed up with Axel to find her, and they discovered that Xion hadn't returned to the castle because she'd lost the ability to use the Keyblade. The three friends came up with a plan; Roxas and Xion would go on missions together, with Roxas pulling double duty to fool the higher-ups until Xion could use the Keyblade again.

It wasn't long before the Organisation got their first look at their goal; Kingdom Hearts appeared in the sky above the castle. But Roxas had more pressing matters on his mind - like teaching Xion how to use the Keyblade again. Finally, the two of them managed it. Life was almost idyllic for Roxas for some time after that, with he and his two best friends spending their spare time chatting on the clock tower. But all things come to an end, and Xion started acting strange and distant, collapsing soon after. Roxas continued to pick up Xion's slack and collect seashells for her while she slept.

Even after Xion woke up, though, things were not the same. Life got busier for the three Nobodies and, slowly but surely, the three began to drift apart. The final straw came when Xion went missing again - and this time, no matter how much Roxas searched, he couldn't find her.

At least until he was assigned to track down an Organisation impostor. Thinking that Xion, with her hood up, was his target, Roxas chased after her - and on trying to convince her to come back, inadvertently left Axel the perfect opening to strike and bring Xion back.

With his friendship with Axel and Xion falling apart, Roxas had even more problems to deal with. His visions and dreams were getting more and more frequent, and on top of that, he seemed to be getting weaker, almost as if using the Keyblade was sapping his strength. And more and more, as things began leaking down through the ranks, the question of who or what 'Sora' was preyed on Roxas' mind.

Finally, after one last sunset together, Xion left the Organisation - for good, this time. After a heated confrontation with Axel, Roxas had had enough. Sick of being lied to, and determined to find both Xion and Sora, Roxas left the Organisation himself to find out who he was.

But he had no idea where to start. Winding up on the clock tower again, Roxas was approached by Xion - who now, as a replica of Sora designed to copy his abilities, looked exactly like Roxas's Somebody. Xion and Roxas fought, and Roxas defeated her. Xion faded away peacefully in Roxas's arms, the part of Sora's memory that had made her up returning to him. However, before dying, Xion made Roxas promise to thwart Xemnas's plot and destroy Kingdom Hearts. With his memories of Xion fading, and determined to fulfil her dying wish, Roxas headed back to the World That Never Was to destroy Kingdom Hearts. However, Riku, Sora's best friend, blocked his path. After Roxas overpowered him, Riku was revealed the truth Roxas had longed for this whole time: he was Sora's Nobody, a part of Sora. Riku called on his dark power to knock Roxas out - and from there, DiZ trapped Roxas in a simulated version of Twilight Town, wiping his memories and giving him fake ones of being a normal, happy teenager while the final parts of Sora's memories were rebuilt.

During the days he was trapped in the program, Roxas rediscovered his ability to use the Keyblade, and also ran into Axel, who was trying to return Roxas to the Organisation. However, Roxas was driven by DiZ to where Sora was sleeping on his seventh day in the computer program, and after regaining his memories of his time in the Organisation (sans Xion, who had effectively erased all trace of herself from existence after returning to Sora), a heated battle with Axel ensued. Roxas won, promising to meet Axel in the next life, and soon after, rejoined Sora to become a part of his heart, enabling Sora to awaken.

Although Roxas was no longer his own person, he still made his presence felt even while inside Sora; Sora cried upon leaving Hayner, Pence and Olette - Roxas's three best friends from the fake Twilight Town - and upon Axel's death in Betwixt and Between while Sora was fighting to get to Xemnas, Roxas actually awoke briefly inside Sora, resulting in a mental battle between the two in which Roxas told Sora that he "made a good Other". Roxas made one final appearance before going back to Sora completely, having one final conversation with Namine before returning to Sora's heart for good and becoming whole.

[ Personality ] :
At first, Roxas hardly had a personality to speak of; as most Nobodies' personalities come from their memories of when they were human, and Roxas had no memories, he came into the world as a blank slate. However, as Namine commented, Roxas tried incredibly hard to be his own person - and this resulted in a surprisingly strong sense of self for someone who has no idea who he is.

Roxas is on the whole quiet at first, only really speaking when he has something to say. He's curious, and inquisitive, full of questions about how the world works, and doing a lot of thinking over the answers - especially when the answers he's given don't quite mesh quite right with him. This tendency to get lost in thought a lot makes him seem a little spacey to others, to the point where Axel has affectionately said that even after coming out of his shell a little, Roxas is "still kind of a zombie".

However, with his friends, Roxas is cheerful and surprisingly talkative; he appears to genuinely care and worry for them, and he's keen to help them out and see them happy. Roxas also appears to be incapable of lying; he's honest with his friends, and he trusts his friends to do the same with him. His outlook on friendship and on a lot of the world in general seems a little on the naive side; although he's perceptive and smart, his world view is very simplistic, and he has trouble seeing the bigger picture sometimes.

Roxas is also very wilful and impulsive. This usually manifests itself in snarky asides ("I could have done that blindfolded"), but when he gets angry, he often acts rash, releasing all his frustration by lashing out wildly, either verbally or with the Keyblade. Although he usually obeys his orders from the Organisation in the end, and seems to feel some loyalty to them until things go sour, Roxas often questions his orders, if only to himself, and often ponders taking another course, such as helping Tinkerbell in Neverland. In the end, Roxas's strong will wins out as he asks himself just why he always just obeys blindly, and leaves to find his own path.

Some of the ways Roxas acts call into question whether he really doesn't have a heart after all; Roxas's outbursts of anger are a lot more frequent and genuine-seeming than other Nobodies, and Roxas is also the only Nobody to have been shown weeping, an undeniably emotional response. As Roxas says, though, he can't just look inside - so whether he has a heart of his own or not, it still remains that Roxas is a lot more emotional than your average Nobody.

[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
Roxas is a very competent keyblade wielder; he has the rare ability to duel-wield keyblades, and when doing so he usually uses the Oathkeeper and Oblivion to great effect. He’s very nearly able to beat Sora in a fight, and in a match of skill alone, he defeats Riku by a large margin - Riku had to use the power of darkness in order to subdue Roxas. Roxas can also cast magic spells such as Fira, Blizzara, and the other standard spells in the KH universe.

His weaknesses would be that, although he’s somewhat better than Sora in this regard, he is still naïve and trusting enough to be taken in by the wrong people continually; he’s quite easily manipulated by several people in the games for their own ends.

[ Other Important Facts ] :
It’s widely believed that the reason Roxas is such an unusual Nobody with regards to his feelings is that he actually has a heart - Ventus’s, to be exact, which having been inside Sora’s heart came with Roxas when Sora opened his heart with the keyblade in the first game. As far as I’m aware this hasn’t been explicitly confirmed yet, but I am bearing the theory in mind, especially considering there’s a Ven here at Vatheon.
