His dorm room felt weird.

Mostly because it wasn’t his. Not yet anyway. Being the only boy in a family with two girls, he’d never had to share a room before, and while he did better with people one-on-one-he wasn’t exactly sure how he was going to react to having to be around the same person twenty-four/seven. If they didn’t get along, things were going to be-awkward-and that was not what he wanted. He wasn’t even sure what he wanted. He just didn’t want things to change, because he didn’t do so well with change. He really didn’t. Moving away from home was a big enough change that he didn’t want to go through another one anytime soon.

He was sitting on his bed, bouncing a tennis ball aimlessly against the ceiling. He should be out there, getting to know people. But it felt kind of weird, to go out and meet people when he hadn’t even met his roommate yet. Because he knew that was the first question people were going to ask him. How do you like your roommate? Don’t know, haven’t met the guy yet didn’t seem like the right answer to give.

Besides, he didn’t mind taking the time to adjust to the room. He’d never been away from home this long either. There was something about being out on his own, that he was excited, but he was nervous all at the same time. He actually had something to look forward to, instead of just breezing the day by. And he didn’t know what to do first.

His roommate had already moved in a few days earlier-he had an on campus job, so he moved in before anyone else. If John knew where that on campus job was, he would go check it out, but considering he hadn’t even met the guy yet, he had no idea what the job was. So all he could really do-or all he felt he could really do, all that he had talked himself into being able to do, was to sit and wait for his roommate to return and finally actually meet him for the first time.

The monotone thump! of the tennis ball against the ceiling was slightly hypnotic after a while, and after about ten minutes he had drifted off to sleep, only to be awakened a little while later by the presence of someone leaning over him.

“Haven’t even met the guy yet, and the smell of your gym socks has already killed him-that’s not a good sign, Ryan.”

“Shut it, Claire-he’s just sleeping.”

“Are you sure?” ‘Claire’ was the one leaning over him, he could tell that much, and he figured that he should probably wake up and let them both know that he was awake-figured he might as well save ‘Ryan’-the roommate?-from facing homicide charges from death by dirty gym socks. He blinked open his eyes, and he could see the dark haired woman leaning over him, but he couldn’t help it when his eye line met her chest first and, unfortunately, went right down her shirt.

He stared briefly for a moment, before slapping his hand down over his eyes, and cringing. “Oh, fuck. I’m sorry.”

“What?” He could hear the frown in Claire’s voice, but he didn’t open his eyes quite yet. For all he knew, this could be the guy’s sister or girlfriend-either way he was going to wind up getting his ass kicked. That really wasn’t a good way to start off a roommate relationship, having the other roommate think that you were checking out their sister or girlfriend.

There was a snort from the other end of the room. “Nice going, Claire.”

“What’d I do?”

“You just totally flashed the poor guy.”

“I-” There was a brief question mark on the end of the statement, as the girl probably looked down and realized what had happened. “-oh, shit.”

“Yup.”

There was a slight rustling of a person moving above him, and when he opened his eyes, Claire had moved across the room, and he was free to sit up and look very, very apologetic. “I’m really sorry about that.”

“Don’t be,” ‘Ryan’ shrugged, before walking over and plopping down on the bed next to his roommate. “Hamiltons have no concept of personal space. So it was really all her fault.”

“Thanks, Ryan,” Claire rolled her eyes, looking slightly embarrassed. “Thanks a lot.”

“It’s true,” Ryan said with a shrug before turning back to John and holding out his hand to him. “I’m Ryan. You’re-”

“John,” he replied, shaking the other man’s hand. “John Benson.”

“Awesome-and that’s my sister Claire.” He nodded towards the other woman, and she gave John a weak smile. “Nice to meet you.”

“Likewise,” John nodded, before rubbing his hands on his thighs lightly. “You know, most guys would have kicked my ass for something like that.”

“Yeah, well most guys wouldn’t have freaked out like that when they woke up with some girls tits in their face, so I figured I’d forgive you on that one,” Ryan said with a shrug. “But that’s really not all that important.”

“It’s not?” John frowned.

“Nope,” Ryan shook his head. “What matters right now is where do you want to go par-tay?”

“Party?” he said, raising an eyebrow slightly, and Ryan nodded with a grin. “As in alcohol?”

“Yup.”

“On the first day?”

“Oh, yeah.”

John hesitated for a minute, before tilting his head to the side slightly. “Why?”

“Dude-why not?”

Well-it was going to be a long year.
