Author's Note: I didn't intend for it to be this when I started it, and I didn't consult godess_loki at all on how William would react to this, but I hope I got it right.
Disclaimer: I don't own the characters of CSI:NY. They're owned by CBS. William belongs to goddess_loki. However, I do own Eva and all other original characters, so please don't steal them.

He was avoiding her. She could tell, and frankly she didn’t blame him, considering the way she had treated him. Now they were stuck under the same roof and there was nothing she could do about it. Well, she could move, but really-where did she have to go? She couldn’t-well, she didn’t want to impose on anyone else, and while she knew it was selfish of her to do, she couldn’t help herself. And he deeply resented her for it-she knew at least that much.

But things were starting to get better. They were starting to go out again-occasionally go out for dinner, or a movie, something simple and low key. They were even starting to talk again. But every so often, he would find himself getting close and shut her out again. Like this time-she got tickets to a show at a performance in Jersey, and she’d told him about it weeks in advance, and he said he’d probably be able to go. However, when it came down to the day of, work came up, as it usually did.

So now she had two tickets for Much Ado About Nothing, and no one to go down to Jersey with. At least for the moment. She hesitated for a minute-she hadn’t seen him since she had left the city, and she wasn’t sure if she should call. He and Jeremy could have been off doing something that she was interrupting terribly. She took a deep breath, before swallowing and dialing the number quickly.

“Hello?”

“Hey, William.”

“Eva!” He was surprised, she knew at least that much. “How’re you doing?”

“Good,” she nodded. “Good. I’m-I’m back in the city.”

“Really?” he said. “That’s good.”

“Yeah-and I was wondering if you were interested in heading out of the city for a little while?”

“Out of the city?” he asked.

“I have these tickets for a play on Saturday, and my date ditched me. I was wondering if you felt like taking a train ride with me.” She paused for a minute, before running a hand through her hair lightly. “I can totally understand if this is a bit out of the blue and you’re busy but-”

“I happen to have nothing but free time,” he said quickly.

“Really?” she said, sitting up slightly. “You don’t have plans with Jeremy or anything?”

“He’s got something going on at the school this evening. So if you’ll have me-I’m all yours.”

“Great,” she said with a wide grin. “The show’s at seven, so we’ll need to catch the train around fiveish-I’ll meet you at Penn Station then? Just outside?”

“Sounds good to me,” he nodded. “I’ll be there.”

“Great,” she said with a sigh before hanging up again, feeling a bit lighter than she had a few minutes earlier.

“I still can’t get over the blond,” he said, shaking his head as they walked across the Montclair campus. Eva stuck her hands in her pockets with a grin.

“It’s not that bad, is it,” she said, tilting her head up at him.

“Well, no-it’s not bad at all. It’s just-strange.” He watched her again as they came to a stop at the train station, sitting down next to her on the bench while they waited. “What show did you say you were doing it for again?”

“Hairspray,” she said with a sigh. “And it’s my Broadway debut, so you and Jeremy better make it to at least one performance.”

“Can you get us tickets?”

“Certainly-it’s not like my family is coming,” she sighed, before leaning back against the bench. “Just let me know when you guys want to go.”

“I will,” he nodded, before leaning back and looking around as well. It was a nice campus, albeit a little bit sparse, urban and isolated. “So this is where you went to college, huh?”

“Yup,” she said with a nod. “Bruce Willis went here too.”

“Seriously?” he said giving her a look. “You’re kidding.”

“No, I’m not. He’s actually grew up in Jersey.” Eva grinned. “He didn’t graduate, but he was here till his junior year.”

“Wow,” he said, shaking his head. “That’s crazy.”

“It was rumored that he may have come back for some school productions, just for good PR, but I’ve never met him though,” she said with a sigh. “And I probably never will.”

“Well, never say never,” he said with a shrug. “Stranger things have happened, and you’ve got a long way ahead of you before you can start saying never.”

She could tell he was confused, and she originally wasn’t going to say anything to him. She wanted things to be just like normal for once, and not have the tone of the evening change to awkward or sad because of the news she had to give. However, with the turn that the conversation was taking, she had a feeling that she wasn’t going to be able to avoid it now. She really needed to learn to keep her mouth shut sometimes. However, the fact that she was actually going to have to tell him didn’t change the fact that she didn’t want to.

“It’s not that simple.”

“Why not?”

She was quiet for a minute, and she could tell that he was starting to get worried as well. She shifted uncomfortably, crossing her legs in front of her before looking down at her hands. “I have HIV, William.”

There was a very long silence for a minute, before he shook his head slightly, almost as though in denial. “What?”

“When I was with Matt-apparently he contracted it and he passed it on to me,” she said softly. “I got a call from the clinic where he got tested informing me that he had been diagnosed, and that I should get tested too-just to be safe. I-I tested positive.”

There was another long silence, and he spoke up again, this time his voice going from confusion to anger. “Can I kill him?”

“No,” she sighed, shaking her head. “It’s not worth it. Really.”

“Well-you know there’s meds and things right?” he said with a frown. “You could still be with us for years.”

“Considering my luck?”

“Don’t even start that,” he said, giving her a look as he slid his arms around her shoulders to pull her closer. She buried her face in his shoulder, and tried to ignore the way his voice wasn’t exactly as sure as it had been earlier in the day. “You’re going to be fine.”

“Yeah,” she said softly, not really feeling it as much as she should, but saying it nonetheless. “Yeah, I guess you’re right.”
