A/N: Yay, mentions of academy!Roy and Maes.. I dunno why I adore that so fucking much. :)
It hurt...
Every time he heard Maes talk about his wife and his daughter, it hurt him.
He had his chance when they were roommates at the academy- beer and whiskey soaked nights where they stumbled back to their dorm room in each others arms- desperately holding each other up with shaky hands and rancid breaths.
Maes had even made advances a couple of times, starting to unbutton the alchemist's dress blue jacket.
Oh God, it hurt.
But Roy knew damn well that despite what the alcohol was making him do, Maes had no interest in his best friend- not in THAT way.
Too bad the feeling was not mutual.
So every night, Roy would feel a little bit more of himself die when he pushed Maes off of himself. He got the man undressed, at least partially, and then tuck him into bed.
He just had to hope and pray that Maes didn't notice the shiver that ran down his spine when he touched Maes' bare skin as he was undressing him for bed.
If it ever had been, Maes never said.
Maes never understood why Roy got so upset when the bespectacled man called him at least once a day to talk about his family. He never understood how much it pained him that it could have been him who Maes was talking about, dreaming about, living and breathing for.
Or... then again... maybe he did.
