Arts and Crafts Time

A while back I picked up a new hobby: using plastic beads to make video game sprites. The results have been varied, but I've gotten fairly decent at it finally...

Behold! The dog from Duck Hunt holding two duckies! Also, the Arnold Schwarzenegger Comedy Collection.

And on my humble refrigerator, Dr. Wily conspires turning a Pizza Express magnet into a devious pizza-shooting robot.

DO A BARREL ROLL!

It's... a Glide Guy and the spread gun power-up from Contra. My wit is broken.

As you can see, these are just nifty little pieces that I can creatively adorn my apartment with, plus give away in exchange for free food or small amounts of money. A full set of Final Fantasy 1 party members has kept me fed on a number of occasions for instance. Anyway, these are all great and fun, but they've all been relatively small thus far, not much larger than a DVD box at the biggest. Last night I ended that streak. Last night I decided to make something a bit bigger, something with a little more bite to it, something that would be a knockout... something that slipped into a downward spiral after a surprising knockout loss to Buster Douglas in 1990.

Yeah, that's right. Iron Mike Tyson in all of his 8-bit glory. As you may be able to tell in the picture, he's a bit of a big boy. He's double the height of any other piece I've made prior. He's missing a bit of his head in that shot, just to give you an idea of how many of those damned little beads have to be placed one by one to achieve the final result.

BAM!

Here's how he looks after all the bead placement is done. Mind you, after this phase is a lot of ironing and flattening out with books (these things tend to curl like cosmetology students). He's still in the midst of flattening now, so I'll post pictures of the finished product later, but for now, this:
