Remember that you are in a Virtual World - not a traditional 'game' where you must kill everything, gather gold and try to win. Do not be too desperate to gain lindens right away. Asking everyone "How can I get a job" or "Can you give me lindens" will not make anyone happy.
Take some time to get to know the grid. Wander, learn, pay attention, listen more than you speak, learn your viewer controls.
If you are interested in avatar fashion, follow fashion blogs. If music appeals, follow various performers. History appeals? There's regions set in all phases of the timeline. Soak up the news of the subcultures.
Soak up some knowledge your first three months - and then put some thought into how you wish to develop your own personal Second Life. If you still want to get a job and gather in the lindens, you're now better prepared to do that.
Would you go into someone's private house uninvited? Would you walk up on stage during an event in which you were not a part? No, of course not. Don't do it in SL either.
Perhaps the big thing is, is that just because something is Virtual, doesn't make it "not real". Because SL is more than a chat-room people will invest much more emotionally into their avatar(s) and builds. Ideally wither in first or second life, one seeks to go about one''s business without undue stress, or hindrance.
Pissing anyone off in a world where you don't know who they are in first life, is an act of stupidity, because it's impossible to know the ramifications of that. Maybe you'll never meet them again. Maybe they'll complain and you get banned. Maybe they are actually a little psychotic and will make your further SL experience a misery. maybe they are obsessive stalkers and hackers and will find out who you are and screw you over in first life. Less likely I know, but it's a nOOBs mistake to assume that there are no consequences to any of their actions.
