So, thinking today, here's what I thought:

he hates rings, I hate rings.
Sucks to the rings.

Let's exchange kittens.
With this kitten, I thee wed.

Don't tell me that kittens die. I know that. Like gold is permanent either?
When the kittens are gone, when the cats are gone, when the fur carpets soaking up the sun are gone
I'll still have him.

Among some old Teutonic tribes, a tabby cat or kitten with a marking on its forehead - like a "B" laid on its back - was considered to be an excellent wedding gift. The "B" rune, or "Berkano" represented the birch tree, and was associated with the earth, prosperity of the new home, and motherhood. Often times, a birch would be planted in front of a new home, to bless it, so to gift a new couple with a small house guardian marked with the sign of the birch was to wish them many children, full bounties at the harvest, and a stable homestead.

Methinks your instincts for an exchange of kittens are right fine and fitting.

that's what I'll tell my mother.
The teutonics did it, which means that I can, too.

Yeah, but the Teutons had other habits you probably don't want to enlighten her on. That whole bit about the blood eagle, for example...

You have the mind, if not the soul, of a poet, and I envy that but love the fact I know you :)

...gold is more permanent than kittens.

Golden kittens would also be fun, though. Maybe on a charm bracelet, to go along with the real ones.

It's not a ring, either.

I'm very very very very good at losing jewelry.
I like wearing things that don't come off and are not particularly valuable. My only current jewelry is a piece of string wrapped four times around my wrist.

You HAVE been able to keep that piece of string for an inordinate amount of time, though.

that's because I don't take it off and there are no protruding bits to break. and it nevers sticks me, so I never think about it. It's like a little moveable part of my body.
