So, it turns out that for a while now stores in certain areas have been using very high frequency sound to keep "young hoodlums" away from their stores. Until tonight I'd never actually heard an example of the sound they are playing.

Most evil thing someone could put in a store. Evar!

Most teens just find it slightly irritating though as opposed to a true deterrent; however, most adults still can't hear the sound and so when teens turn around and use it as the ring tone on phones they're supposed to have off in class....

Yep. But thats mostly because even the average teen doesn't typically have the hearing range to make it a deterrent to begin with. Here's an interesting though:

Parents often can't hear this, right? Well I promise that your average 2 year old can hear it loud and clear and they often can't express exactly why it is that their ears and heads hurt. They'd have an even worse time with this than I do (and I hear it quite clearly). So now parents just get to deal with angry and upset kids whenever they shop at certain stores. Fantastic.

I wonder if you could charge such a proprietor with some variation of assault... I definitely could see someone suing for mental anguish and winning... sad sad sad.
