[Aya is at the Inn and heading for his room. He's just turned on his Gear and is clearly about to say something. Cu, the Eevee, is sitting on his shoulder looking perfectly chipper as they walk down the hall ( Read more... )

[Despite himself, Mamoru's smiling a little from the sight of Aya covered in a rainbow of streamers.]

Happy birthday.

That will put you at a disadvantage in battles: having so many of the same type.

I understand winning isn't important to you in and of itself. But it's rumored obtaining all of the badges is the path home for those who are assigned Trainers here. If you feel any wish to hasten your return... it's the most constructive way to spend one's time here, isn't it?

The path to home.

[He murmurs that before he suddenly dips down and picks up Cu who looks at him curiously, touching his paw to his face.]

Mamoru, do you believe that these creatures are real here? That they live and breathe and that those like the ones we train need us?

[Mamoru spends a couple of moments just watching Aya and Cu.]

...Truthfully, I'm not sure what to make of this place. For this world to be a video game on Earth, it would be simplest to consider everything here, even ourselves, as having somehow been digitized. But it doesn't seem possible it can be that simple. Life rarely is, isn't it?

Then, what I have to believe is that the Pokémon are as real as we are here. And that a mutually symbiotic relationship develops between Trainer and Pokémon... I agree that we have a responsibility to take care of them while we're here.

But... Aya-kun...

[He can't speak for you, but he feels his greatest responsibility is still back home. And he has a moral obligation, as a result, to make the fastest return possible his priority. Take care of the Pokémon while here, of course, but don't lose sight of the larger goal.

What will happen to his Pokémon after he leaves... he can't afford to dwell on that.]

I arrived here during a time when I was in the middle of a battle. A friend is hurt and needs me. The others do as well. They are my responsibility.

[He looks over at Mamoru.]

But what kind of person would I be if I just decided that innocent creatures who rely on me weren't important? If I just decided that thinking about what would happen to them wasn't as important?

In the end, both moments matter to me. But I cannot just disregard one or the other. I will find a way back but I will not let these creatures that are in my care possibly pay the price. Even if the task is impossible, I will find a way.

[For Aya to talk about the specifics of what was going on when he was pulled from home is alarming in a sense. Mamoru knows he would not be bringing that up unless 1) there was an important point to make that depended on that information for context, and 2) there was considerable trust in the recipient of that information. It is not a revelation Mamoru will be sharing-- not even with the others in their traveling party. Not even with Ken.

He listens somberly to Aya's perspective. He can understand and completely respect that take on this world. Even admire it. It's funny in a way, how it seemed Aya had taken over as the idealist between them, even to the point of irrationality. And yet he holds it with such conviction, it's impossible to see it as a shortcoming.

After a period of quiet, considering all of that, Mamoru smiles warmly.]Then, let's make a promise, Aya-kun. Whichever of us leaves first... The other will make sure all of his Pokémon are still properly cared for. If something should happen, and you disappear before finding ( ... )

[Aya takes that in and returns the smile. There's always that bit of something behind his eyes. Almost as if it's pain. As if he's forever suffering to make up for all the crimes he's committed. If that means finding a way to make sure that they all get back and the Pokemon in his care are watched out for then so be it.

All he knows is that there is no way he can make up for all he's done. Despite that, he still has to try. For all those who need him to keep living even if he's sure he doesn't deserve the life he has.

He holds out his hand as Cu moves to sit on his shoulder. Those he doesn't always agree with Mamoru, he still holds a certain trust for him. And he knows that Mamoru would respect his decision no matter what the case.]

I'll keep that promise.

[At heart, Mamoru still values his responsibility at home the most. But Aya is someone for whom he's willing to go extra lengths. After all Aya has done for him, both as Omi and as Mamoru, the chance to do something back is a welcomed responsibility. Even if it costs him a little extra time in his larger goal. It's a small price for helping a friend. He'll be absolutely sure Aya's Pokémon continue to receive the same care and love that they do now.

He knows Aya will guarantee the same of Shiro and the others.

He takes the offered hand and shakes, sealing the promise.]

So will I.

[Aya looks at the mess that is his room again and shakes his head.]

Would you like some cake before I have to clean all of this up?

I think you have that a little backwards, Aya-kun. Sit down and have some cake; I'll clean up the mess.

[He blinks because he's actually surprised. Someone clearly hasn't celebrated his birthday in awhile.]

[Mamoru is already squatting to pick up a couple of streamers on the ground. He looks up and just smiles.]

It's fine; it's your day isn't it?

I don't actually mind helping...

[Which means he's moving to help. Yes, he's that bad.]

That's like you. But Ken-kun went to extra trouble to make that cake for you... It would be rude if you didn't have some.

[He looks up and pauses before glancing at the cake. At least it's on cardboard so it won't get the bed dirty...]

I suppose you're right.

[THANK YOU. And it only took a tactical manipulation of your emotional weak spot to get an agreement. Did that really have to be so painful?

He'll just be going about and picking stuff up now and making sure you really do sit down and eat.]
