I wrote 1000 words of something last night. Compared to the word counts flying round my flist it doesn't sound like much, but for the first time in ages writing was fun again. So progress, I guess. I hope it lasts, but we shall see.
Earlier this week I watched L:Change the WorLd (Not a typo) - the spin off Death Note Live Action movie.
I much prefer the way the movies ended to the series. This is because everything gets that much worse after L dies.
While Mello and Near and Mikami were all great characters their arc was just dull compared to the first arc of the series and it just barely recovers for the finale.
In the movies L is the one who defeats Light in a much neater way than the series, even if he has to die in the process - it feels much more right, that L take Light down.
That being said, other than the ending I do prefer the series.
While Tatsuya Fujiwara's Light doesn't quite hit the mark Ken'ichi Matsuyama as L is fabulous, which is why I quite liked the spin-off movie: L:Change the WorLd, even if it was rather silly.
Change the WorLd chronicles the last twenty three days of L's life and his struggle to solve one last case - some eco-terrorists who was to purge the world by releasing a deadly virus.
The director says that he wanted to discover L's human side and he did quite a good job of it. I really like Matsuyama as L, who makes the film.
Which leads me to one of my personal bug-bears about Death Note fanfiction. While I do enjoy reading about L interacting with the Wammy's boys the fact that he is often characterised as a caring older brother to the orphans - especially to Near, Matt and Mello just doesn't fit.
I always got the impression that while the children at the orphanage may have idolised L, he didn't give a shit about them other than a vague interest in their abilities. Certainly not to the extent of reading them bedtime stories or buying them Christmas presents.
Which is why I liked how freaked out and out of his depth he was when faced with children in Change the World.
Near in this is a little Thai boy who is the sole survivor of a virus effected village. There is no Mello but Maki, the twelve year old daughter of the scientist who helped develop the virus and who also comes up with a cure (before killing himself and destroying it once he figures out what his colleagues intend to do with it).
There's one scene that sticks in my mind - Maki has just arrived at L's headquarters after having watched her father die a gruesome death and escaping the eco-terrorists. Overwhelmed by everything she starts to cry and L has no idea what to do other than offer her candy - which doesn't help - so he goes away to try and ignore her. Then Near comes in to see what all the fuss is about and starts to cry as well (perhaps in sympathy) so you have these two children crying and L just gets this expression which says, "WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU? OH FUCK WHAT DO I DO WITH THESE ANNOYING WET THINGS?"
Not that I don't think that L couldn't warm up to the Wammy kids - he certainly does in the film - but I don't think he would voluntarily spend any time with the orphans unless... IDK they was on the run from crazy eco-terrorists.
I don't think I've read anything where L is forced to take charge of the terrible threesome and it is horrible and awkward and they all get on each others' nerves before they get fond of each other. Once that happens I can kinda see L being a hopeless awkward and adorkable guardian but I doubt he'd just decide - oh poor kids - I must shower affections and chocolates and robots on you.
I'm not saying I don't like AUs where they're one big happy family. But sometimes I'd like a little more misunderstandings in my wacky misunderstandings.
And another thing: In my movie-verse alternate continuity head-canon Maki totally grows up to be girl!Mello and she and tiny!Near team up and FIGHT CRIME!
