I just flicked on KERRANG TV for their 20 Hottest Rock Chicks countdown. To my utmost horror there were some bands I hadn't heard of that deserved more of a listen. This of course got me thinking: are there any more bands I've missed out there that are ReallyRatherGoodTMSo reader, who should I be listening to? Who had grabbed your aural attention ( Read more... )

I trust Vicki Spit is somewhere on the Kerrang list...

In some of the shots you can see the band's breath on the air. I think they made that video in cold storage!

it would have been ace if she was in the line-up

at the time of writing the top 5 hadn't been aired but for your pleasure here they are...

top 5 hottest rock chicks:
- at 5 the veronicas (huh?)
- at 4 hey monday (have you experienced this shite band?)
- at 3 no doubt (rock, is it?)
- at 2 avril (hot? avril? if you like jailbait..)
- at 1 paramore (her hair's hot, i guess...)

serves me right for watching KERRANG!...

I am obviously not down with the kidz. I only recognise the singer out of No Doubt (who I thought had a whole new career as a MOR easy-listening balladeer now) and Avril Lasange, or whatever her name is, who looks like she's bunked off school.

I looked at Hey Monday. A band precision-groomed for rampant ordinariness, I think!

So reader, who should I be listening to?

Hmmm... I've only really found two new bands of late:

Triaxis. I'd never heard of them until I saw them at the Damsels Of Destruction female fronted metal festival earlier in the year and they stole the show. Sadly they haven't managed to capture their live experience in the studio, and while their recorded output is OK, it's not a patch on their live performances. Also, the lead guitarist has just left, and he was a large part of what made them so good. Time will tell if the replacement will be able to fill his shoes.

The Mercy House. Another band I'd never heard of until I saw them live. They were supporting The Green River Project, but outclassed them. Just straight ahead rock/metal, but they do it well.

There are several others that have been around for a while but have come into their own (or come to my attention) this year:

Into The Woods. Female fronted metal. "Warbling tart" music, as some would say. I saw them as a support band last year, and while there was some promise there, ( ... )

I bought a digital TV receiver a few months back and I am quite baffled because Kerrang TV appears to be a radio on it, only one time they had a programme called Chris Cornell's Top 25 (or whatever) Videos. On the radio. Sometimes, I just don't know, you know? I just don't know.

I enjoyed seeing Esoterica on their MM support slot before Chrimble. They're from Croydon, and were really enthusiastic. Bit of a grungy vocal sound going on (oops, nearly wrote grunty there!) They said 'seeya in the bar' and lo, there they were, we met them in the foyer at the end of the gig, signing stuff and chatting.

And the Sixty One has been interesting to dip into to listen to random new stuff: http://www.thesixtyone.com/
