Speaking as someone who's done it, I would get there on the same day as everyone else (i.e the Saturday), even if it puts you out. This is one occasion where you want to conform - you don't want to mark yourself out as different. The first day is so important and the bonds and friendships made will probably set up a template for friends you will have for the next three years, largely thanks to those first few hours as you find yourself flung together in a seige-like situation. You don't want any little thing to mark you out as different. Those initial friendships are bourne out of empathising with people in a similar boat, so you want to avoid everyone else bonding on the basis of finding everything new on the first day when you have got there a few days earlier and know it all already.

That is a point (even if the word "conform" makes my skin crawl) though I must admit I thought, with so many students, they'd have staggered the student move-ins throughout the previous week. It's going to be absolutely hectic with so many people and luggages. Plus you need to register yourself and sort out finances on the same days.

The main problem for me is getting up there; I'll need somebody to accompany me and my father won't be able to on the weekend... I'll have to find somebody else.

What about your Mam and/or her partner? Obviously if you can't physically get up there then there's not much you can do about it and I daresay it won't matter too much.

Mum is the last person I'd want to go with; she'll already be sobbing her heart out at me leaving and I'd rather she didn't do that at the university. It'd be better if she could be here at home with the rest of the family. And she hasn't got a partner. :-p

It may be that I'll have to go with an aunt, or maybe my uncle John. He could help. Otherwise I'll just go alone.
