DPNs all the way! I've tried magic loop and two circs, and it just drove me nuts with all the sliding stitches and fiddling around. Bleah!
Favorite book by FAR is Sensational Knitting Socks - you get to check out the construction, and then it shows you how to build socks for any size foot. Far easier than a pattern that may or may not be the right size for your foot or your yarn. AND she gives instructions for DPN, magic loop and two circs, so you can use whatever technique you like best.
Worst thing would have to be the time my DPNs slid free of the stitches in my bag, and the sock got seriously unraveled. Oooops.
I've used DPNs, and I want to try other methods, but I just haven't gotten around to it.
I remember that I learned from a website/class online, but Sensational Knitted Socks is a really good and useful book too. I can't say that I have had a horrible thing happen while using DPNs other than dropping a stitch from time to time. I have almost snapped a few DPNs while trying on my socks while they are still wips, but nothing too scary (knock on wood).
