It is not the hand of the girl he loves, but he takes it.
She’s cold, and he holds her close, her lips are soft. He kisses them, wiping away her tear, and embracing her, chasing away the shiver that courses through her body as the chilling wind sweeps over them both.
They walk together, for a few minutes there is a peaceful silence. He glances at her, seeing inside her eyes a deep loneliness, a hidden past, an unshared secret. He wants to ask her who it is she longs for, instead he shares his own pain.
I’m still in love with her, he says.
I don’t think she wants me back.
And even if she does, I don’t know how to go back.
I don’t think it can be the same again.
I’ve messed up.
She’d be stupid to take me back.
She looks at him, and a soft smile spreads across her soft lips - he can’t help but kiss them. He wonders if he could make it right again, with someone new…
We can’t be together, she tells him.
You know we can’t.
Give her time to heal.
She’ll take you back.
She’d be stupid not to.
I’d give anything to be able to take him back again.
But too much has gone wrong.
He holds out his hand to her.
She takes it.
