Ah, man. That's just...

That's just as plausible as canon, and just as heartbreaking.
*sniffle*

Good stuff.

This seems so possible if only John had found someone to trust with the boys. I like that somehow it changes nothing in the end.

Cool story.

I really don't think it would have. Or at least, I can't picture it, and I don't want to see that dynamic change; it's what I love about those Winchesters.

:) Thanks.

Oh, that hurt. I loved that despite everything John never forgot how important they were, because that is the way I see him in canon, and very few authors write him this way. This is so going in my memories. Lovely, if sad, story.

:D I'm happy to hear you liked it, and that you liked the way I wrote John. He's a really... nuanced character that I find hard to write. @__@

See, it could have been this way, but I think the reason that it wasn't goes as deep to the heart of the SPN gestalt as any other aspect of the show, and that is that John didn't trust anyone to take care of the boys (at least not very long-term) except the few other hunters who got close enough. (Canonically, we know of 2 with whom they ever stayed: Bobby and Jim.)

So while there's a LOT of good stuff here, and I can still see "our boys" through the AU-ness of it...it's a tough one to accept as an AU. Maybe it's just where my head is, right now, writing a lot of wee!chester fic and a lot of John and his decision-making processes.

I really did like the alternative ways in which they drift, the idea that Dean would take off once Sam's gone and try to finish his father's quest, the way they wind up the same-yet-different.

I dunno. Lots to like; the central conceit just feels so anathema that it's hard to divorce it from canon for me.
