[ A scroll gilded in gold has suddenly materialized in front of Itachi, directly in his line of sight. When he opens it, he'll discover that is a scroll for the Rinnengan Kekkei Genkai that will allow him one usage of it -- from the moment of activation until the moment of deactivation; or until he no longer has enough chakra to keep it activated. ]

*Itachi stares at the scroll as it falls into his lap. He does not know what it is, or what it is meant to do, but given its sudden appearance, he assumes it is the work of the gods who control this world. He unrolls it carefully, ready for whatever may come from it, but is surprised by what he finds. At first he does not believe what his eyes read in the elegant script, but still he carefully re-rolls and ties the scroll and gets up to find a safe place to hide it. It is not something that should fall into the wrong hands if it does indeed provide the user with use of the Rinnengan, even if it is only once.*

*Is amused beyond words, but he doesn't tease or taunt like he's tempted to do, because he knows this is bittersweet, as adorably hilarious as it is. So he just smiles instead, managing to keep his laughter internalized. He's not sure how Itachi feels about it all -- if it's a good memory, or one that hurts.*

Ah, I almost forgot it was your birthday...

*Itachi is not amused. His birthday is something that Itachi does not care about at all, something he wished to pass in as unremarkable a fashion as every other day of the year.*

It is not something that matters greatly.

*The underlying tone is clear. Itachi does not want any spectacle made out of this.*

*He understands intrinsically, and the smile dissipates.*

Mm...

*There's a slight pause. It's a little awkward. He can remember the last time he actually said happy birthday to Itachi, and the memory's still fresh in his mind. Even if it's one that's nine years old.*

If you're feeling up for it... it's been a long time since we last sparred.

*Itachi stares at him for a moment, unsure if this is a different manner of teasing than Kakashi's typical brand, but the look on his face tells him otherwise. For a minute he weighs the offer. It has been some time since he did any serious training...perhaps it would remove some of the darker thoughts that had been roused by his latest journey through his memories. A distraction was always welcome when needed.*

What did you have in mind?

[pulls his hand away from the device, staring down at it for a long moment]

That was... kinda sweet. Seems like your little brother really loves you.

*Itachi blinks, eying at the unknown individual on the screen of his communication device. He does not know how to respond to such a comment on such THIS topic of all things.*

....

*Had he been more alert and less distracted by the memories of that time, Itachi more than likely would have disconnected their communication immediately. Instead, a soft sigh finally breaks free from him.*

He did.

[ is suffering a little bit of carry-over emotions from touching the hitomi during his dream, and is a little bit softer than usual as a consequence ]

Hey... at least it wasn't something embarrassing, y'know? Though I guess it still sucks to have something that personal broadcasted.

*Itachi stares silently at the screen once more, realizing that he almost left himself open in that moment. He is tempted to just cut the connection, but for some reason does not. He simply continues to stare at the young boy through the screen of his Hitomi, trying to gauge his intent.*

*Sasuke's just staring at the screen, expression as blank as he can manage. Anyone perceptive enough could perhaps pick up on that slight strain at the corner of his lips, the faint twitch in his brow, as he lets the dream coalesce with the memories he remembers he has of this same day.

He wants to call Itachi a liar, wants this gap between them to rewi--

It reminds him of how irritatingly stupid he'd been that he almost wants to cringe. Instead he continues staring, waiting. He has nothing to say, doesn't know what he can say, but that's nothing new with Itachi.*

*Itachi doesn't know what to do. Those familiar are staring at him, waiting, expecting of him as they always have--although now out of recrimination instead of adoration. But he doesn't know what to do. His first, instinctive response--the one the dream produces that urges him to smile and wave and greet his little brother as he always ha...used to--is not appropriate, would probably never be appropriate again. So Itachi chooses the second response, the only option left available the reaches across the bloody, rotting abyss between them.*

Sasuke.

[Kisame holds the Hitomi as he looks down into it, shaken and surprised even as something like a smile tugs at and curls up the corners of his mouth. This dream thing is still bewildering to him, but this is definitely Itachi that he's seeing, Itachi that he's feeling these things with. It's a side of his partner he's never really seen before, though he's been able to guess at, to some extent--private, unspoken musings, trying to give some shadowy shape to the fathomless inner life of a man he's known so well, for so long, yet actually knows so little about. It's kind of nice to catch some bared glimpse of humanity there, even if he's not sure how to take all of this.]

Itachi....? Where--what.... How long have you been here? [He's not entirely sure what all to say about the dream, either; it seems likely more prudent to take care of the immediate business of reuniting with his partner than talking about it, if Itachi is even willing to talk about it at all.]

*Itachi is surprised to see the face of his partner on the small device's screen. So Kisame was here too, although given how and why he had been sent to Konoha, it is most likely that Kisame would have found himself sent to Kirigakure. Then he realizes that this meant that Kisame must have seen--felt--the dream. Instantly, he wonders how he should handle the situation, how he should explain a dream that is far more intimate than anything he would have ever wanted another to see ( ... )

Two weeks.... yeah, that's right. We must have gotten here the same day. [He laughs, though there's a buried undercurrent of frustration there, irritation at the near miss; it feels somehow as though fate is mocking him, like he should be checking around for someone hiding behind a rock and laughing. A lot of life feels like that, bothersomely enough.]

So that must mean you.... [And the look Kisame is suddenly giving Itachi must seem potentially more dangerous to him than the dream-questions that hang unaddressed between them--he looks concerned. Worried, even, as he is wont to be when Itachi is overtaxing himself, or getting into a situation of especial danger. Kisame is metaphorically pricking his ears up on the alert to listen, intently scanning what he can see on the Hitomi for injuries, sharply appraising how the hell Itachi has managed to stay in Konoha--it has to be Konoha, if he's in Kirigakure--for two weeks without getting hurt or assaulted. Konoha is larger and more populated than Kirigakure, he'd have expected other ( ... )

*The look Kisame is giving him is one that Itachi has seen before, if not often. It's the one that his partner gives him when he thinks he's doing something unnecessarily dangerous. It makes him want to sigh in exasperation, as Kisame is quick to warn him of his limits. He's not sure if it is the sign a concerned friend or one of a watcher reprimanding their ward.

Itachi furrows his brow slightly when Kisame begins to speak, only to change his statement. Instead of questioning him on it, he weighs Kisame's own inquiry and what they should do. Kisame cannot come to Konoha. While the ninja of Konoha have accepted Itachi himself--even if not completely--putting Kisame into that situation would not only put his partner in the line of unnecessary danger, but it would also affect Itachi's status as a spy in Akatsuki should it still be required. No it would be best for them to meet somewhere else.*

Perhaps it would be best to meet somewhere that we would not need to behave too inconspicuously. Wave Country should serve as secure, neutral
