[ Here is not the childhood you remember.

You see it, through the Hitomi: you think you can almost, almost feel the tinge of emotions and sensations that accompany these images. Uchiha Itachi once loved his brother. His family. And the ghost of that love taps into the wires. Taps through them - a chord of thought - so Pain feels the fingerprint pulse of childhood wraiths, like the Rinnegan's ripple pulse through the spider-veins of his own machinations and machines ( ... )

[Itachi is so surprised by Pain's words that he is not sure what he is supposed to think or how to react to the enigmatic man's...unexpected proclamation. Pain had never been one to truly open himself up to his "subordinates" beyond promoting the cause of their organization, and yet his words here are obviously meant to be...comforting? Empathetic? Itachi finds these attempts strange from a man who promotes pain as the only way people can ever be made to understand anything about themselves or each other.

How is Itachi supposed to respond to something like this? It completely takes him out of his usual element as this is not something he ever thought he would be discussing with Pain of all people. And yet...someone who is so obsessed with trauma and "pain" is not someone who is unknown to the tragic realities of the world. And that open offer of...camaraderie, even though there is the acknowledgment that anything more than that is unlikely and nigh impossible for people such as they are--jaded by the Truth that is Life and ( ... )

[ So Akira doesn't have any brothers or sisters. He's been alone most of his life, but he gets that watching at a distance feeling. Maybe more than he'd like to admit, having touched the Hitomi when the dream aired. Having felt this special bond with a complete stranger, he feels compelled to comment... ]

You have kind of a brother complex, don't you?

[Itachi recognizes the boy as the one he had spoken to before and had seen commenting on other dreams through his Hitomi. He wonders why the boy has chosen to once again make himself known to Itachi, when he had ended their previous--brief--conversation so abruptly. And to make such a comment? This boy is so blunt that Itachi wonders if he even knew the words "tact" or "polite conversation." It is somewhat amusing, despite it being in regards to a topic that he did not want to discuss.]

Hn. Perhaps.

[ He knows those words. They were on a list of adjectives labeled 'not necessary for totally awesome ninjas.' ]

I don't have any brothers or sisters, so I don't get the knots people work themselves into it over them, but. I bet you'd feel better if you just told him how you felt. I mean, I get why you'd keep it to yourself, because it's crappy to be jealous of him having friends his own age, but...

I bet you'd feel better. Is all.

[Itachi wonders if there is something about him that is sending the message to this boy that this is a discussion he wants to have. It is obvious by his naive outlook that he did not understand the kind of situation that he was commenting on. This could have been from the misleading scenario presented by the dream, Itachi knows, but still his overly optimistic solution reminds Itachi of...Uzumaki Naruto, which in a way is both ironic and laughable. It seems that he is destined to have idealistic and overly intrusive children constantly intervening in his non-existent relationship with his little brother, when they would never be able to truly understand it ( ... )

[ Kids are special. Anko has always believed this.

This, though, this is just plain weird, and once again, Anko feels a bit voyeuristic as she experiences Itachi's dream.

Anko remembers hearing about the Uchiha Massacre--she'd been eighteen or nineteen at the time--and wondering what could compel someone to do something like that? More recently (and more importantly), she remembers these two boys, Uchiha Sasuke and Uzumaki Naruto, remembers their team's progress in the Chuunin Exams and their contribution to the Gaara situation from the report she'd been intending to write up before coming here.

Those kids, she thinks, are really special.

But none of the things Anko knows line up with what she's seen here--where does the Uchiha Massacre fit with Uzumaki Naruto' relationship with Uchiha Sasuke, with this strange glimpse Anko's had of the inner workings of S-class missing-nin Uchiha Itachi? None of this follows. None of this makes sense. ]

You know... [ and she wonders why she's speaking at all ] you're really something.

[Itachi stares, the face on the screen of the Hitomi not registering with a name at first, but then he blinks at it is there.]

Ah, Anko-san. To what end do you make yourself known? Competitive banter against the "enemy?" Or just the unstoppable drive to express your opinion?

[ Hn. She remembers that he had a reputation for his sheer prissiness. She makes a face at him, just to prove he doesn't scare her even though he does, just a little-- ]

Both!

[ To most people, Kakashi's expression would be completely unreadable. To those who know him well, they would notice the softening of the corner of his uncovered eye, the way in which he cants his head. The slightest tilt of his eyebrow.

These nuances are small, but it's the details that matter sometimes. ]

I don't think it's too late.

[Itachi would have expected this response, even if he received no others...but that did not mean he was looking forward to it. The look on Kakashi's face is one he has seen far too often since the Truth was forcibly revealed and Itachi has become most adverse to seeing it again. He knows it is not a look of pity, but the sense of embarrassment and vulnerability he feels when faced with it only makes him more prepared to reject anything Kakashi says when he wears it.

Especially about this subject.]

Is this not something we have already discussed? I believe I disagreed with you then and my opinion had not changed on the matter.

Drop it. This has nothing to do with you, Kakashi, no matter how well-meaning you intend to be.

[Itachi wonders if there is a way that he can simply not dream if they are all going to create this kind of reaction in others, as he cannot stop them from being seen by anyone with a Hitomi. It's becoming quite annoying and is far too intrusive for him to ever be comfortable with it.]

[Itachi raises an eyebrow at his Hitomi.]

Hn.

[He lets out a derisive sound that is a hybrid between a laugh and a sigh.]

I am not sure someone who cannot even walk into a village without blowing something up for entertainment can speak about obsessions anyone else may have. Especially when their own are nothing more than reckless and flashy.
