He has been my partner for nine years now. We get along very well together, despite how different we may seem.
Given how much time we spend together, it is inevitable that the mind will mix the messages in our brain while sleeping. He has been in my dreams before.
[Kisame is still groggy as he watches the dream; he looks rather like he'd be letting out a monster yawn, if he weren't too busy laughing.] Itachi-san, what the hell? A plush toy, really?
[He doesn't even look offended, so much as amused and just kind of boggling at the oddity of the dream. How strange, being so much smaller than his partner for once.... And to be honest, he'd never considered himself cute, huggable, or anything even remotely similar--he was frightening, that was something he had known ever since he could remember. Though the young Itachi in the dream had gotten at least the detail on the fish right; he enjoyed cooked seafood, but Itachi had doubtless seen plenty of incidents where he had just bitten the head off of a still-flopping fish for convenience's sake, without bothering to do any preparation on it at all. (The blood added to the flavor, and the bones and scales gave it a good crunch.)]
[His amusement tapers off some, and Kisame offers Itachi a grin.] You and Sasuke were pretty cute as kids.
[Itachi is not as amused as Kisame is by his dream, and yet he can understand why this could be amusing to his partner. The dream itself makes very little sense. Itachi does not recall behaving in that manner when he was a child. He had not been allowed toys at that age, and his mother... She would not have been the one to deny him of something had he truly wanted it...
Such an odd dream.]
Sasuke had one as a child. It seems the information has been recalled and mixed with new information during the processing as I slept.
[Itachi wonders if Kisame is making fun of him with that smile. No, he knows he is.]
Yes, well...you were rather...likable as a stuffed toy. You agreed with everything I said. Kisa-chan.
[Itachi only gets a confused look at his "explanation" of the dream; Kisame doesn't get it. He's always had more holistic beliefs about dreams, whether they're prophecies, omens, desires, secrets.... Whatever, they generally mean something, even if only to whoever dreamed them. It's kind of boggling, really, how Itachi can manage to suck out the heart and soul of even dreams themselves with his analysis.]
[Kisame mock-scowls at that, though he's still amused; he thinks he's got a right to tease a little, after all--Itachi was cute. Even cuter than he'd been at 13 when they'd met, though Itachi has (mostly) grown out of that by now.] I agree with you when you aren't saying dumb things, at least. Does that mean I'm not likable now, goshujin-sama? [If Itachi's going to refer to him as his toy, then naturally, he'll just have to refer to him as his owner....]
[....Even if he does entirely miss the other connotations of the word. Fail, Kisame.]
[Itachi snorts at Kisame's description of his "agreeableness."
But that words stops him short and he looks at him curiously. Why would Kisame choose to use it? Was it still part of their banter? Seeing the playful look in Kisame's eyes, Itachi guesses that it must be.]
Hn. So you don't mind being my pet? Interesting.
[Well, if Kisame wants to call him his "owner" then, Itachi can play along...although it does make Itachi somewhat uncomfortable. He would rather not make his partner think he wants to control him.]
Well...as a plushie, you're much easier to squeeze. And Sasuke liked you.
[Itachi at times wonders if Kakashi finds everything he does amusing in some way. But his words are not as light as he makes them and Itachi is confused by the intent that he believes is there.]
I am not sure what you mean by that? "Like" what? This is a dream that is non-factual and processing of information during sleep. I am not sure what you think it is supposed to symbolize.
[ It's weird and messed-up subconscious sludge, and Anko's not supposed to reply to Akatsuki dreams anymore, and she's been very good about it, so she sets the Hitomi far away from her while she digests it.
So she keeps herself from impulsively hitting the 'Reply' button, which is good.
But.
It was so fucking cute.
"Weird shit," she says aloud, but inside, she's got some sort of intestinal disease, what are commonly referred to as the "warm fuzzies."
She hopes she's not going to be the one to kill him if the order is given, and then shuts the thought down. If anything, she's wondering if this is a new subversive tactic by Akatsuki: psychological attacks.
...And then she watches the dream one more time. Because. So cute. ]
[Sasori tries to be as circumspect as possible when it comes to this rather delicate subject.]
I suppose one could say that Deidara and I are able to function together well enough, although we have not been together as long.
[He's quick to add another qualifier, lest Itachi gets any impression of too positive an opinion.]
Even if his ideas about art are completely wrong, of course.
[Disgust briefly passes over his features.]
Considering who my former partner is, well...I'm sure that I don't really need to elaborate further about why that partnership was less than agreeable, especially with you of all people.
Let's just say a partner that you're able to work with is a blessing.
[Itachi really would like to forget Sasori's first partner. Just thinking of that damn snake makes his eyes burn, and his fingers twitch with the urge to grab something and squeeze. So he responds to Sasori's other statement instead.]
Yes, it is better to have one you can work with...even if he can be an annoyance and his reckless stupidity makes you have to clean up after him like a child. I do envy your patience.
Perhaps he's still trainable.
[But given the vastness of Deidara's stupidity and uselessness, Itachi doubts it. At least Sasori seems to find ways of getting him to function in a productive capacity.]

I was meticulous in who I paired off.
Kisame is very sensible, and you are methodical.
I think well of Kisame.
My partner is different from me, as well, but we do well together.

[Private to Pain]
It seems that you understanding personalities that will fit together fairly well. It is you I have to thank then. Kisame is...
[Itachi doesn't continue, but the message is obvious. He wonders why he feels Pain can so easily understand.]

Hmm, your partnership must be quite close.

We have been partners for nine years. [Why does it feel like he had this conversation before?]
And...despite your...disagreements [oh, he's being so polite about it] it would seem you and Deidara more than just tolerate each other.
