[What the hell is this.
Not who - because he knows who, oh, he knows. He remembers. Another lifetime ago when he was another person, but he knows. He knows it so well and so vividly that just seeing him, seeing him that way - it brings him back and makes him into the person he was. He is seven (his hair was longer when he was 8, Sasuke is sure of it, absolutely sure) and Sasuke is barely a toddler, a bright-eyed child who knows what he wants - he wants what he sees, right now

[He blinks, because someone is responding and he doesn't recognize the voice. It does sound...somewhat familiar, but overall it is an older voice. A man's voice.]
....Who...?
[He looks down at the screen again and his eyes immediately focus on the red. Sharingan. He's confused, who is this person? He knows this person, and yet he does not. Father has made sure than he knows the face and name of everyone in the clan. And he had thought he had remembered all of them, but when he sees this stoic, serious face in the screen of the small device, all he can think is: I know you. You're an Uchiha, too. Who are you

I don't know.
[God, he's young. He's seven, Sasuke was right, he knew he was right. Practically an infant (but Itachi was a shinobi by that age, trained as a killer, can't forget that), a child. He looks oddly the same, somehow, with those lines in his face, those long eyelashes and gentle eyes but his skin is unnaturally smooth, his expression openly confused and wary and almost afraid. He is slender but there are still hints of baby fat around his face.
Sasuke tries to imagine how small Itachi must be compared to him now. When Sasuke was that age, twelve-year-old Itachi carried him around on his back, could pick up up and hold him easily. Was Itachi so small at that age? Sasuke has only ever known Itachi as tall. Impenetrable. Imposing.
This is a trap. This is a trap. This is not real. This can never be real and no matter how much he wants it, things can't go back. Itachi can't go back to the way he was before he was made into a killer, and Sasuke can't go back.
It's not real. It's not.You need to send me your position. And

[The man's face is so serious that Itachi almost thinks he reminds him of his own Father, but Itachi nods and does as the man says, because he is an Uchiha, and Itachi doesn't know anyone in his clan that he should distrust
( ... )
[He hasn't seen Itachi in ages, but he knows what he's supposed to look and sound like. And one thing he knows damn well is that Itachi isn't supposed to sound like that.]
[This boy...isn't Sasuke. How does he know who Itachi is? Is he someone from one of Itachi's Academy classes? He's moving through them so quickly he can't always remember all of his classmates names.]
[This is not good. This is not fucking right. He'd heard the door open and close a few minutes ago, and hadn't thought anything of it--Itachi and Valeria could come and go whenever they pleased, and he knows he doesn't have to oversee their every movement--then, but now he wishes he'd been a little bit more curious. He wishes he'd at least peered out to see who was leaving--that he had realized a child was escaping, when it should have been a grown young man just stepping outside, perhaps for a breath of fresh air, or to sit down in the spot on the porch he had claimed as his own. He could have gone out, could have caught him before he made it all the way out to the seashore. Could have.....]
[He doesn't know. Could have done something. Helped him. Made sure he wasn't confused, wasn't worried like this, wasn't scared.... Whatever had happened, he is supposed to protect Itachi. He is supposed to be there for him, and wasn't that what he had resolved anew to do after he had rescued the man from Konoha? He had

[Confusion, surprise, curiosity.... Kisame isn't surprised, himself. After seeing the state Itachi is in, he rather suspected this might be the case. He offers the boy what he hopes is an encouraging, reassuring smile as he moves through the village, sharp teeth glinting to add to his inhuman appearance. He's never hidden his looks from Itachi before, after all; he doesn't want to start now.]
My name is Hoshigaki Kisame, and I'm your partner. We've known each other since you were thirteen, Itachi-san--how old are you now?
[He speaks familiarly enough, leaving the title out of respect, rather than formality--Itachi is still Itachi, after all, no matter what age he is. He's still a trained, competent shinobi, still capable of killing. Possibly even still capable of using the Sharingan. That's something important to remember; he doesn't doubt that Itachi would probably be displeased at being spoken down to. But still, he has to remember just how much Itachi hasn't experienced yet....]

[That would explain the confusion he feels. It's hard not knowing people he should knowing, feeling this lack of familiarity every time someone speaks to him. But Sasuke being here makes it easier to accept, seeing the proof. It only hopes things will become easier or that he'll get older fast and Sasuke won't have to take care of him anymore.
Maybe Kisame-san can help him with what he doesn't know.]
This injustice done against your personhood will likely be undone shortly.
I have had similar tyranny inflicted upon me on my name day, and during other occasions. I have grown to think of such spells as being like brief illnesses, such as when one acquires a cough.
You and I met during a time when your home village was brutalizing our lives, and we bonded in our mutual suffering.
I suppose you know me best as a friend in our united pain; we assisted one another in the conflict against evil forces.
[It takes a full minute to piece two and two together and when Iruka finally does, it's like crumpling to the ground. What happened? Why is he so small? Is he alone? Is that some kind of joke?! Hey, that's not funny.
He knows who this is.
There is only one older brother to Sasuke, after all. And because he is a child ...]

Who are you? Have I met you somewhere?

I've uh... seen you around at school! I'm Okuzaki Akira.
[He suddenly can't help but smile. He's used to being the youngest ninja around.]

[He means that, but the other boy's smile is somewhat unnerving. Why is he smiling at him like that?]
But I'm somewhere I do not recognize and my brother is missing. Have you seen any other Uchiha here? Any small children wandering alone?

[Itachi is confused. This strange blue man--are those gills?--is speaking to him. Calling his name.
Itachi doesn't know him.

Maybe when he's older he does know him?]
Who are you? Should I know you when I grow up?

It would seem it is unfortunately your turn to be toyed with by the gods, Itachi.
