[Background]
Uchiha Itachi is the older son of Uchiha Fugaku and Mikoto, and the prodigy of the Uchiha Clan. He became a genin (rookie ninja) at seven years old, and by eight years old he had mastered the special bloodline trait of their clan, the Sharingan. Itachi is both revered and shunned by his clan for his outstanding abilities as a ninja. He goes through the ranks of ninja quickly, and becomes a captain of the ANBU squad by thirteen.
After becoming an ANBU captain, Itachi is pressured by the council of the Third Hokage’s advisors (Sandaime was against it) to kill his clan. It has been discovered that the clan has been planning a coup d’état in rebellion against the oppression they suffer from the government, because they are held in suspicion for the attack of the Nine-Tailed Fox Demon on the village 8 years before. It also turns out that Shisui, Itachi’s best friend, is a spy for the clan sent to watch Itachi’s movements. Because of this, Itachi kills Shisui first, gains the Mangekyou Sharingan; and to protect the peace of Konohagakure, he does massacre his clan, but refuses to kill his little brother, Sasuke. He agrees to leave Konohagakure and never return, but threatens to reveal the truth of the massacre should steps be taken against his brother.
Years later, Itachi has joined an evil organization, Akatsuki, that happens to be secretly led by Madara, a former head of the Uchiha Clan thought long dead, who helped Itachi eradicate said clan, and seeks to capture all of the bijuu (tailed beasts/demons) and jinchuuriki (people who are living containers of the bijuu) to use as a weapon of mass destruction. He and his partner, Kisame, return to Konoha, to capture Naruto, who is the jinchuuriki of the Nine-Tailed Fox Demon. Because Sandaime is now dead, Itachi also needs to remind the council of his threat. Itachi and Kisame fail to capture Naruto, and after leaving both Hatake Kakashi and Itachi’s brother, Sasuke, comatose, they pull back and don’t attempt again for three years.
Over the course of time, Itachi’s health has been deteriorating because of the Mangekyou Sharingan, to point of near blindness and other internal illnesses. Sasuke chases Itachi in order to avenge the massacre of their clan, and Itachi leads him to the Uchiha hideout. Before facing his brother, Itachi meets with Naruto, and passes some of his “power” to him, but hopes that it won’t be needed. When Sasuke and Itachi reunite, they begin a fight to the death, and Itachi’s health fails quickly-he has trouble seeing Sasuke clearly. He still manages to fight Sasuke on even ground, until Sasuke turns Itachi’s Amaterasu attack (special black fire technique) against him by calling upon the lightning technique Kirin to strike Itachi down. Itachi plans to die in this final battle with Sasuke.
[Personality]
Itachi is quiet, reserved, and very analytical. He observes all situations before he goes into them, and doesn’t exert more force or energy than he feels is necessary to get the job done. At the same time, Itachi hates war and fighting. When he was young, Konoha was always fighting with other ninja villages, and Itachi came to hate the consequences that war has, even though he fights because he knows it is necessary. He loves his little brother very much, to the point that when he was forced to kill his entire family, he refused to go so far as to kill his brother, Sasuke. Many of his actions later are meant to push Sasuke into becoming a stronger fighter, capable of killing him, and therefore avenging their clan. By killing his family, Itachi showed how much he loved them, because he spared them the disgrace that a failed coup would bring and maintained the reputation of the Uchiha clan in Konoha, while also bringing all of the shame and negative views onto his own shoulders.
[Specialties/Abilities]
Taijutsu and Ninjutsu - Itachi, being an elite ninja, is skilled in both hand-to-hand combat and a wide array of ninja techniques, because his Sharingan allows him to copy techniques. He knows how to use kunai, shuriken, a sword, and his own body as a deadly weapon to kill his opponents.
Fire Jutsu - The Uchiha Clan is well known for their abilities with fire techniques and as a prodigy of the clan, Itachi undoubtedly learned them all well.
Sharingan - This is the bloodline trait of the Uchiha Clan, a special eye technique that allows them to predict their opponents’ movements, see the colors of charka, and use/stop advanced illusion techniques. The Sharingan also allows Itachi to all other ninja techniques, except for those aided other bloodline traits.
Genjutsu - The Sharingan is perfect for using genjutsu (illusionary techniques) and Itachi is so adept at them that he can cast a genjutsu just by pointing his finger at his opponent, when others would need them to look directly in their eyes.
Mangekyou Sharingan - This is the higher level of the Sharingan, which allows Itachi to not use stronger techniques.
Tsukuyomi - A technique Itachi gained through his Mangekyou Sharinga, this technique pulls opponents into an illusionary world of Itachi’s making and control, where he can torture them for hours or even days, when in reality only a few seconds have gone by.
Amaterasu - Technique gained through the Mangekyou Sharingan that allowed Itachi to call upon a black fire that would never stop burning everything in its path unless he put it out.
Susanoo - A summons-like technique gained through the Mangekyou Sharingan that became an impenetrable shield around Itachi, but could also be used offensively because the spiritual being that serves as the armor also carries a bottle and a unbeatable sword of legend, the Sword of Totsuka that can seal souls for eternity.
[Affection]
Uchiha Itachi is fairly asexual. He does not purposely seek out sexual relations, but he is not biased against any sexual orientation either. Progressing as a ninja, in order to live up to the desires of his clan and his village were all that mattered to him as a child, and after killing his entire clan, he spent his life on the run. Sex was and is not a priority to him. This does not mean that Itachi would not be a willing participant, but that it's something that would most often occur spontaneously, as it would not fit into his life otherwise without great planning and concerted effort on his part for it to be kept out of the pubic eye.
The only person he has been shown to specifically care about his little brother, Sasuke, but he also cared about his parents, his clan (as a whole), and his best friend Shisui. Beyond the reference to a lover made by another character, there is no proof that Itachi even had one, which shows that such intimate relationships will be kept very discreet and close to the heart.
[Fighting]
Itachi is the prodigy of the Uchiha Clan. He knows all of the strongest techniques and secrets of his clan and their prized ability, the Sharingan. After killing his best friend, Shisui, he gained the Mangekyou Sharingan, which allowed him to develop even stronger techniques that were almost unstoppable, but at a great expense to his own health.
Even though he is so strong, Itachi is not all powerful. His fire techniques (except Amaterasu) are weak against water-based techniques, he can be surprised by unpredictable actions of his opponents, and he does not have an extensive amount of chakra to draw upon for his techniques. When he went to capture Naruto the first time, he and his partner both recognized that Jiraiya, the Legendary Toad Hermit, was stronger than both of them and so they bided their time until they could get Naruto alone. One of Itachi's greatest strengths is that he recognizes his own flaws and compensates by not outright rushing into battle, without first being able to analyze his opponents' and thereby work around his own weaknesses to expose theirs. Itachi will show some offense, but only enough to get his opponents to first display their own strengths and abilities. He never starts with a powerful technique, and understands that words can work just as well to goad people when needed.
Even though Itachi prefers to not exert more effort than needed to defeat his opponents, he is capably of displaying a great knowledge and skill of cruelty and tortuous techniques, as hiding within an "evil" war-minded orgnanization meant he had to play the part well. He knows how to break the minds of other characters with his genjutsu, and how to break the body, and will do so if he believes that it is necessary and serves his purposes.
