Harry Potter and the Unexpected Arrival

Harry didn’t know what to do, but he let his feet guide him anyway. Ginny was here. Ginny. He had held her in his arms and heard her voice, and for a few moments it had felt so good. It had felt like things sorting into place, that final click before a lock opens. There were still people that he missed that weren’t on the island. He didn’t dare ( Read more... )

Lying on her bed on her stomach, her feet in the air, Kate was flipping through a book she'd found on filmmaking. It wasn't the type of thing she'd usually spend her time doing, but she'd told Marshall that she'd help him make his movie and if she was going to do something like that, she was determined to do it well instead of totally half-assed. Most people wouldn't expect it of her, but she liked to give things her all.

"Yeah," she said when she heard Harry's voice, circling a passage in the chapter on editing. Marshall probably already knew all this stuff, but it was new to Kate and she wanted to remember what she could. Placing her pencil in the book, she looked up at the door. "Yeah," she said again. "I'm here. Just... studying, sort of. If you can believe that."

"Studying?" Harry echoed doubtfully. With his nerves doing a number on his stomach, he gladly seized upon the totally normal subject. Maybe he could do this smoothly. No big deal. Don't let me interrupt you. Just thought I'd mention my ex-girlfriend is on the island. I'll let you get back to it.

He stepped fully into the room and somehow seeing Kate laying there, casual and at ease and so naturally gorgeous, made his stomach twist again. "You're kidding," Harry said with an unsteady laugh.

"I told Marshall I'd help him make a film on the island and I have no idea how to do that," she said, holding the book up so that Harry could see the cover as she rolled onto her side. "Since he's bound to be all serious about it, I figured I should at least know a little bit about the stuff he'll be talking about."

She still had no idea how she'd actually help, but it was a good first step.

"So what's up?" she asked. "Did you just come to visit your ridiculously beautiful and intelligent girlfriend?"

That made sense. Harry nodded his head at her explanation, finding the movement soothing, at least for him. He probably looked daft to Kate, but he didn't let that stop him.

"Oh, nothing," he said, grasping desperately at an air of effortless cool and failing. Harry was certain his voice was too high; it probably was. "I just um..." He couldn't say it, couldn't just spit the words out without some kind of proper lead up and he wasn't sure what that was.

"Yeah, I came to visit." That sounded normal, which was a comfort, and it was true, in a sense.
