Let's see if anyone can get this, it's a fun one! This is thanks to Cory's father!
The age of a ship plus the age of its boiler is 49 years. If the ship is twice as old as the boiler was when the ship was as old as the boiler is now, how old are the ship and boiler?
Let s = the ships age
Let b = the boilers age
Let y = years
we know that s+b=49
and that 2(b-y)=s
--> 2b-2y+b=49 --> 3b-2y=49
49+2y must be divisible by 3.
so, let y=7 and 3b-14=49 --> b=21
since s=49-b, s=49-21=28
finally, the ship is 28 and the boiler is 21!
