----
Ever since he was little Joon had always dreamt that one day his prince charming would sweep him off his feet. Watching Disney movies was his favorite pastime, and he’d picture himself in the place of all princesses as they were rescued by the handsome and brave princes. He knew it wasn’t normal, that most little boys didn’t think that way, but he couldn’t deny that was what he wanted. As he grew older, the desire never faded; in fact, it only grew stronger. He’d dream about the day that the perfect man would appear in his life: their eyes would meet, time would stop, and it would be love at first sight.
Unfortunately, that’s not quite the way things played out.
It was a few weeks after he had been accepted into JTunes when he first met Byunghee. The moustache the other man had threw him off - he thought he was a manager at the company. When the hairy man came over to introduce himself to Seungho and Joon (who was still Changsun at that point), Joon blurted out a stuttered hello before scurrying from the room, face bright red, completely embarrassed at having thought the new trainee was a manager. He left so quickly that he missed Byunghee’s bemused look and the exasperated “it’s Changsun; he’s weird” that came from Seungho in response to the newcomer’s look.
The next time they met, Joon gathered up his courage to apologize to Byunghee for the quick exit he had made the last time they had seen each other. He heaved a silent sigh of relief when the other man just laughed and waved it off.
“No harm done, I can understand why you might’ve thought that since I’ve got this moustache. Nice to meet you, Changsun.”
For the next few weeks they struck up a timid friendship - well, timid on Joon’s part, anyway. The older man (but only by 100 days, as Joon had found out) intimidated Joon. He was a talented singer, and had been in a group before coming to JTunes, never mind that it hadn’t been successful. He had the experience and the confidence and the talent, three things Joon knew he sorely lacked. He couldn’t help but feel touched that the other man even wanted anything to do with him, seeing as how he and Seungho were the same age and seemed to get along much better. Seungho was to-the-point, outspoken, smart, stubborn; everything Joon wasn’t. It would make sense for Byunghee to spend all of his time with the other man all things considering, but he always seemed to have time to hang out with Joon, even if it was just for a few minutes.
Joon never questioned why Byunghee wanted to be friends with him and simply went along with it, happy to have someone to joke around and laugh with. He never questioned why his insides would flutter whenever he was around the older man. And when Byunhgee left to go hang out with Seungho, he never questioned why his heart would ache a little.
It wasn’t until a few months into the training period when Joon finally started to sense something about the way Byunghee behaved when he was around Joon. A touch that would linger a bit longer than what was socially acceptable, a flick of dark eyes to parts of his body that didn’t normally get that sort of attention (that he was aware of), a smile that seemed like it was only for him…
He’d shake his head at these thoughts, telling himself he was just imagining things, that Byunghee was just being nice, the same way he was to everyone. But one day something happened that he couldn’t just brush off. He was sitting at the window of their dorm, looking outside at the falling snow, sighing as he let his imagination carry him awake like it hadn’t had the chance to do for a long while since practices starting picking up in intensity and frequency. He let his oldest fantasy play out inside his head as he watched the world outside become covered in white; he was a princess locked away in a tower, no friends or companions, lonely and sad. Then one day, a handsome prince finds the tower. He climbs up to the room Joon is kept in, and upon seeing the trapped princess his heart is immediately enamored with him. He scoops Joon up in his arms, and they kiss, and then the prince whisks him away to his palace and they live happily ever after. Joon sighs as the fantasy comes to an end, jumping when he feels a hand settle on his shoulder and a warm voice murmurs next to his ear.
“Here, princess, we don’t want you to catch a cold sitting next to the window when it’s snowing.”
A moment later a warm blanket is wrapped around his shoulders, and he’s looking back with wide eyes at the retreating back of Byunghee. His mind struggled to process what the man had said. How had he known…?
Every day for the next week a similar occurrence would happen. As soon as Joon would think about his fantasy, Byunghee would show up and make a kind gesture, calling Joon “princess” without a trace of mockery before walking away again. Each time the nickname passed the fur encased lips, Joon felt like his heart would beat right out of his chest. His cheeks would flush, and a glowing warmth had taken up residence inside his stomach. The next time it happened, Joon managed to murmur a small thank you along with a shy smile, and then things began to change more drastically. Byunghee would wrap an arm around Joon’s shoulder whenever they stood next to each other, would hold his hand if they walked anywhere, would lean in close to murmur into Joon’s ear if he had something to say to the younger man. Joon knew it was flirting, knew that their relationship was changing, but he was so nervous. Nervous that if he let himself believe that his fantasy was finally coming true, that it would all come crashing down around him. And then one day, when they didn’t have any practices scheduled, Byunghee showed up at Joon’s door holding a bunch of roses, and all of Joon’s resistance faded away.
They started dating, and Byunghee would take him out to dinner each night where they would have low conversations about anything and everything. They would stay in to watch a movie, cuddling together on the couch and feeding each other popcorn. They took it slow, and day by day Joon could feel himself falling further in love with the other man. Soon enough, boyfriends progressed into lovers, and Joon gave himself to Byunghee for the first time. It was magical, incredible, and as they lay in bed afterwards Joon knew he wanted to spend the rest of his life with this man. A month later, and during one of their late night dinner dates Byunghee got down on one knee and pledged himself to Joon with all of the love in his heart.
“Joon, the love of my life, the princess of my heart, I pledge to be your noble prince for the rest of my days if you will give your hand to me in marriage.”
And through his tears of joy the only word Joon could manage to choke out was ‘yes’. Byunghee stood up and swept Joon up into his arms, spinning him around before kissing him deeply, and in that moment Joon knew that his fantasy had come true. It hadn’t happened the way he’d always imagined, but he wouldn’t have changed this moment for anything in the world. And they lived happily ever after.
