Character Name: Rose Lalonde. In her canon, she's also known by her pesterchum handle, tentacleTherapist, and her title, the Seer of Light.

Canon source: MSPA: Homestuck

Personality:
The first time the reader sees Rose, it's as a vibrant shade of violet text that appears as one of John Egbert's friends through the client Pesterchum. When John talks to her, she seems wise beyond her years -- mature and refined, Rose is the only kid to type with correct grammar and syntax. She prides herself on her elegance, often using an extensive vocabulary to display her intellect. Intelligence is something that Rose Lalonde has in spades, and she's not afraid to admit it: she reads Lovecraftian horror stories at the age of thirteen, and has a deep interest in writing. She dabbles in psychoanalysis, often joking with her friends that she's writing all their interesting quirks and habits down in a notebook to keep for future publication (no one actually knows if this is true or not). Certainly, she seems to have insight into her friends' behavior more than any other person in the game, befitting of a Seer. Rose is also the person that orchestrates most of the game, becoming the first server player and directing John through the game while simultaneously keeping a verbose game guide such as the ones found on GameFAQs. She is meticulous in her planning and orchestrating, detailing every section of her journey through the game until the results of the game prove that there is no way they can win. Her intelligence ekes out here as well -- it's her prosaic rendering of the game that initially attracts Kanaya's attention and gains her affection.

In addition to her intelligence, it's clear that Rose is a very secretive person. She hides things from her friends -- secrets about her wizard slash (which is written so elegantly that it's actually quite difficult to parse) and her journal full of MEOW code, the genetic code that would be stolen at a later date to create Becquerel, the omnipotent first guardian of earth. While the other kids are content to tell most of their ideas straight out, Rose prefers to hide her master plan until it benefits her to reveal all the steps. She is not above lying to her friends in order to gain something -- harmless lies, but lies all the same. She tricks John into finding The Tumor by telling him it's treasure. Later, she remarks to Dave that it's actually a bomb, used to destroy the Green Sun and therefore rid their session of its aberrations. However, she has yet to explain all this to John at this point, instead acting as a beneficial guide in his quest to win the game while hiding important information for a later date.

Above all, players of Light desire power, or the collection and retention of information that could place them higher than any other player. While Rose has no aspirations to rise to God Tier -- though she questions Doc Scratch and Kanaya about this, simply taking in her options -- she is led by the forces of the outer ring, which she is privy to as a Derse dreamer. Rose fully believes in the power that information holds, and will destroy things to gain it -- she rips apart the seams of the game and her world in order to unearth the secrets of the Green Sun, flagrantly disregarding the warnings of the trolls. Knowledge is useful, and Rose knows how to distribute it for her personal gain. Taking risks is simply part of the game, and she will play the game to its fullest -- death is not a deterrent to her. She purposefully listens to the gods and creates her Thorns (dark magic-fueled knitting needles) with the intent of following their orders on the promise of knowledge and a successful game session. Power plays are frequent in her dialogue, both with her friends and her mother. Rose doesn't like losing in anything, be it SBURB or a simple conversation. She must always get the last word, frequently having verbal spars with her ectobiology sibling Dave. Her ability to analyze other people's tactics makes her a formidable foe where passive-aggressive tactics are concerned. She knows just how to annoy or frustrate whoever she's speaking to -- the exception being her mother, who tends to treat most of Rose's subtle plots to one-up her as a joke, casually responding. This has led to a sort of separation between Rose and her mother, one that continues to grow as they exchange displays of "parental and childhood affection" for each other, which Rose has grown to detest. She can't stand her mother lording information and parental lineage over her, and attacks in the quiet but effective ways that she has come to know -- overly sentimental thank you notes, small stacks of change and sparring when they meet in the hallways.

But Rose isn't a cold, emotionless person. Sure, she likes to appear as such, but she's human like the rest of the kids, and experiences the same sorts of things. However, Rose believes that it's inefficient to go around spewing emotions all the time -- she only expresses her sorrow or anger when it's so great that she can't hold it in any more, like after her Mom is killed by Jack Noir. She actually cares a great deal about her family and friends, despite seeming detached. While her sort of affection is a little lopsided and strange, she does wish all the best for them, and works towards success with their interests in mind. In her mind, she hides information to help them, as well as better herself. Rose would never purposefully hurt any of her friends, and despite being a little chilly, she does admit that they are her best friends, and she loves their company. After all, the scholar needs someone to pull her out of her corner with Lovecraft occasionally. She's also very compassionate towards animals; Rose loved her cat, Jaspers, dearly before he passed away. She made her first friend in him, and this sort of tender affection for pets seems to translate over to not only her pony, but also her new (mutant) cat and the consorts of her world. The consorts are elegantly dressed in fashion that Rose designed herself (with the help of Kanaya, supposedly), and she takes care of them, even bringing them with her as helpers when she travels to Dave's world. This same sort of affection and desire to take care of things for her animals is a variation of the protection she feels for her friends, only more readily apparent. She doesn't want to seem weak, though, so most of the time she hides what she feels and presents the calm, reasonable exterior that most are used to seeing. She has gotten so good at this facade that it's her natural reaction -- excessive displays of emotion are uncomfortable for her, and she would much rather talk about things calmly than display hysterics. Sometimes, however, her feelings get the better of her, and she will tear apart the game in order to get revenge for the people she loves.

Rose can also be fairly silly -- she rides Maplehoof into the sunset to the tune of western music, wearing her mother's scarf and letting it blow in the wind. She uses a magnetic 'w' for the refrigerator for a fake moustache, grinning at her new evil accessory. While she adores the erudite and the scholarly, Rose is also a normal thirteen year old at heart, capable of having great fun when the occasion arises. However, this is another thing that she keeps hidden -- it's not seemly for someone who wants to become a famous psychologist and author to be seen holding green Ws up to her nose. But the desire to do ridiculous things is still there, and she occasionally lets her crazy, teenage side out when she's by herself. There's a lot less pressure to do what's expected (or what she thinks is expected) when she's by herself, and Rose revels in the solitude that being an only child gives her. She's had ample time to explore her interests, and cares for her precious free time, as it allows her to be a real person, rather than some sort of emotionless weird kid (which she's not, she is quick to remind her friends). Rose just doesn't want people to think less of her -- power lies in the exterior presented as well as the interior knowledge behind the words, and Rose leaves nothing to chance.

History: Here is the link to Rose's personal history, and here is a brief summary of the entire comic.

I will be taking Rose from the end of [S] Descend, immediately after she blows up her first gate.

Strengths:
+ Rose is exceptionally intelligent for a thirteen year old, possessing an advanced command of the English language and knowledge of many different genres of literature (though her favorite books are works in the style of Lovecraft).
+ Able to take command of situations in a rational manner.
+ Skilled in the art of knitting and playing the violin.
+ Rose is needlekind, and as such can down an opponent three times her size using only knitting needles.
+ Creative in unusual circumstances, such as the confines of SBURB and when attempting to find the origins of the Green Sun.
+ Able to work under pressure, and also calm other people down with logical thinking.
+ Not only can Rose down an opponent using needles, but she's also extremely graceful, rarely ever making mistakes in fights or acrobatic skills.
+ Will take on any challenge, and can be extremely stubborn when it comes to expressing opinions.
+ However, she also has the common sense to admit when she's wrong. This isn't common, though, as Rose takes great care to make sure that her evidence is correct.

Weaknesses:
- Will let her intelligence override all other things of importance, if she deems it necessary.
- Sometimes her stubbornness and desire for perfection get the better of her, making her emotionally removed from her friends and overly focused on what she wants her outcome to be.
- Despite being a good fighter with knitting needles, Rose has no idea how to wield more practical weapons, and anything too heavy would be impossible for her to lift. She's built for grace and agility, not strength.
- Is more likely to react with sarcasm or a passive-aggressive statement than true sincerity, no matter what she may feel otherwise.
- Rose holds her ideal personality to such a high esteem that she would do anything to achieve it, sometimes leading people to think that she doesn't care or simply wouldn't do things for them (even when the opposite is the case).
- Overly secretive, to the point where it might hurt her friends unintentionally.
- Holds in her emotions, and finally explodes when a traumatic event pushes her over the end.
- Relatively secluded; she knows a lot about the world in practice, but hasn't lived a lot of it personally. (She would never admit this, though.)
- Can hold deep-seeded grudges or wars against other people, for misconceived reasons (for example, her oneupmanship competition with Mom).

Preferred drop-in point: I'd like to be in Seattle, if at all possible? If not, then feel free to place Rose wherever you think she would gain the most frustration.

What are some of your plans for this character in their new environment? As the Seer of Light, Rose has been in control of the majority of the information for SBURB since her and her friends' entry into the game. She frequently has all the answers, and prides herself on her information. However, in a new setting, she will have none of this knowledge, and must reestablish communication and ask questions in order to become the girl with all the answers again. It will frustrate her -- she hasn't had this problem in what seems to be a long time. But one of my goals is to attempt to force her to work through this frustration, and learn that sometimes, one must accept the inevitable shift in power to eventually come out on top.

First Person Journal Sample:
You know, when one has no idea of what the outcome for a particular situation will be, their first guess isn't usually the recreation of a long-lost planet. I'm currently wondering how I seemed to land myself in this particular universe. I can only imagine that this is a completely different world than the one that, last I saw, was going up in flames. Unless I've magically been transported to the past? But that isn't my expertise. I'm no Knight, nor would I ever want to be - I don't envy Strider his one-man traipsing waltz through time.

Could someone please give me a more detailed explanation of what's going on? I've already surmised that not only have I been pilfered from my world, but I'm also some sort of miscreant in the present one. Though I would like some clarification on what I've done to merit such treatment. Surely the accidental destruction and salvation of humanity wasn't too malevolent a deed. It's not as if I have control over the weather patterns any more than I control the stock market or passage of time. How did I get here? I'd also like to know, if anyone can tell me (or really, if anyone's listening): is there a way to get back? I've left some tidbits of unfinished work at home, and while I appreciate the light vacation I'd like nothing more than to return and finish what I started.

Ah. It looks like I've been too forthcoming with my questions. My name is Rose Lalonde, previously of a world that's been destroyed. If anyone...well, if my friends Jade, John, and Dave are here, I'd like to hear from them. Since we appear to be in a world that's not our own, I'd be grateful if you could simply advise me of your whereabouts.

Third Person Sample:
While letting her friends drag her around to see the sights certainly entertained her, it was nice to have time alone now and then. Rose sat, surrounded by books that she had manage to scavenge from other people, a large tome in her lap. Classics were good, but Jane Austen was never her favorite -- the heroines were simply too melodramatic, filled with conventional plot lines and no psychological depth whatsoever. Still, a book was a book. And even if the front cover was missing, Rose relished the fact that she held paper between her hands once again.

Opening to her page, she softly touched the edges of the book, feeling the flimsy page between her hands. It would be so easy to tear it -- the book was in a precarious position, obviously held by the whims of its owner. Rose frowned at the section of the novel. Circumstances are far from ideal, but you're no fainting mistress from the Victorian era, destined only for childbirth. Her thoughts scolded, reminding herself that she couldn't mope or get frustrated about this new turn of events. You've got a brain, a rather remarkable one, so use it. Figure out your current situation and act upon the given information.

She refused to be beaten. This was a horrible setback -- even more devastating than finding out the session was doomed, almost. Being stuck was worse than Rose could possibly imagine, but certainly nothing life-threatening at the moment. She could handle this. While it might seem impossible, she would sort things out and understand everything again. It wasn't beyond her. Looking down at her book again, she realized that she held the small page in a death grip. Though Pride and Prejudice often got on her nerves, it didn't deserve a page-ripping, no matter how stereotypical the plot line. Tearing up her new, papery friends wouldn't get her anywhere. And besides. Hopefully she would acquire enough to trade them and get a copy of Lovecraft. Things could always look up -- she would have to be careful not to make careless, arrogant errors, but she could handle things.

Releasing the page, she settled back into her chair and began to read.
