This is exactly why I have zero interest in Mage: the Ascension.

Yeah, that is exactly what I've heard about Mage. I will be honest, I was not overly impressed with the old WOD Mage either, but for the opposite reason. I found the magic system to be too open-ended.

i liked mage, but then again, i'm a power gamer :) as for the one thing i'd like to point out about your self conversation you just had (so fun)

what spell would you like to create?

that is IMO the biggest difference between DND and your game. which one sounds more limited to you?

That is a good point. I do think Lore is much more versatile.
