tutorial { changing hair color

Jul 20, 2013 02:47

someone asked how i made sam's hair pink and i couldn't figure out how to tell them in words even though it's pretty simple so here's a tutorial idk

What we're trying to achieve:

1) You'll start out with this. Image size is 100x100. (Picture from grande_caps.)

2) Create a new layer on top of the background layer. We will refer to this layer as Layer 1.

3) Pick a color, any color! In this case, we're going to use this shade of pink I chose at random. It doesn't really matter.

4) Using the brush tool, color over Sam's hair on Layer 1. DO NOT COLOR ON THE BACKGROUND IMAGE. Your result should be something like this:

Pretty wonky, but we'll fix it.

5) Next, we'll select layer one and click the tiny scrollbar above it. On mine, you'll see the word "normal" inside of it, but I don't know if it's like that on the other photoshop programs. Anyways, once you find that, find the effect that says "color" and select it. (Hue will work as well, but I prefer color.)

6) Your image now looks something like this:

Still a little wonky, I know.

7) Using the eraser tool, you'll have to go through and fix the edges yourself. Make sure you have Layer 1 selected as you do this, or you'll end up erasing the actual image! Afterwards, you'll have to change the opacity of the layer. The opacity bar is right next to the dropdown box that says "normal".

8) I used fifty percent, but it's whatever looks best. Mine looked like this:

9) Afterwards, you're going to want to merge the layers. Right click one of the layers and click Merge Visible.

10) After you do this, I like to lighten the image. It makes it look more natural. So, right click, duplicate layer...

11) And you'll have a copy! I did this twice.

12) Then you select the above layer, click the dropdown box that says "normal" and select "screen".

Your image should be lighter now! (Again, I screened BOTH new layers.)

13) Basically, all you do is merge the layers again, and it'll give you this:

Hopefully this was helpful?? (Probably not because I suck at tutorials.)
