Since you're California, see if you can't get a work-study job. If you're living on your own (eg no longer a dependant) then you should be eligible for FA.
I would get a work study job (if you can) for the main reason you can be invested into the State Pension system. At least where, when I worked at the library that one day I was invested in OPERS (Ohio Public Retirement System). Or try working a local gov't agency. I know the bloody state is broke, but there are a multitude of ways to find school.
Apply for grants and scholarships for LBGT students, etc, etc. Try not tinker with credit...it can and will bite you in the ass.
