MILE 33
Outside Jericho I lie. People probe, searching.
I know what happened last night. Not telling.
Something new. Fresh. Strangers.
Voices: talking, lying, and leaving. I can wait.
I know the truth. I remember the swan’s final flight.
Tide’s coming down. Water over me, vibrations above me.
Arguments in the night. Engine revving. Footsteps running.
Constance brought me gifts tonight. I only caught the one.
Part of me went with him. Take me home.
Water takes away sin. Don’t wash me away.
I never forget; Constance gave me a gift.
It is gone, but I remember.
Outside Jericho I lie. Waiting.
