DOUBLE HELIX

Mary called out desperately to her husband, “Is he alright?”

“He’s fine. Absolutely perfect,” John said, accepting his son from the nurse.

“No sign?”

“Not yet,” John affirmed, bending down to lay Dean in his wife’s arms. “He is a gift. A gift to us, and our gift to …”

Mary smiled, reassured. “To … everyone.”

John held his wife against him. Her smile faded as she saw his face. “It’s OK, he assured her, “Sammy is a blessing. Nothing more. Nothing less. He is a part of me, a part of you. They both are. The … best … of both of us.”
