Author: Seergirl
Pairing: Georgia Kirk/Winston Kirk
Rating: PG
Warnings: Character death (duh), prompt not exactly as asked for, Gender-swapping, un-betaed (Goddess Help me)
Summary: Georgia Kirk has been a mother for exactly seven minutes and fifteen seconds.

Georgia Kirk has been a mother for exactly seven minutes and fifteen seconds when she shoves her tiny daughter into her husband’s hands. “Gentlemen” she nods at the medical officer and two security officers behind him. “Get my family to medical ship thirty seven.”

“Georgia!” It is a protest, a plea.

“I’m the acting captain. I have to keep the Romulans busy, the evacuation…” out of words she lifts her hand to caress his face but stops just short; pain and sorrow and desperation written across her features.

Georgia looks into his eyes, hers pleading for understanding, acceptance. “This is my duty and I’m sorry, so sorry. Please understand,” they seem to say.

The whole world narrows down to this one moment, this one second between them. The explosions and tremors fade away and Winston realizes that this is hell, this is his nightmare -he will not even have a body to bury. Georgia looks down at their daughter in her husband’s arms and then up at Winston’s face. He sees her resolve firm. “I’ll win this.” she says.

Her eyes shift again to the men behind him. “I gave you an order.”

She turns and runs flat footed, still in her birthing gown, blood drying on her thighs, to the bridge. She doesn’t look back.

“Georgia!” The arms of the men behind him hold him back and it is only the child in his arms that keeps him from struggling harder, from going after her.

“Medical ship 37 is my family onboard?” Winston can hear his wife-his captain’s voice over the intercom.

“Yes Ma‘am.”

“Go now.”

“We’re just waiting for you ma‘am.”

“No! Go now! That’s an order!”

The ensign piloting the medical ship knows that tone of voice in a superior officer and doesn’t argue. “Yes Ma‘am. Taking off now.” He engages the thrusters.

“No! No! I can‘t do this without you.” Winston isn’t aware he’s shouting, pleading until he hears the baby crying from the examine bassinet.

“You won’t” It is a simple, soft assurance; one they both must know is a lie, that reminds him why he fell in love with this crazy, beautiful, insane, brilliant, amazing woman.

“The is suicide Georgie.” He is not crying, not yet, as he tries in vain to plead with his wife. Winston wonders how this is winning.

“Probably” she concedes and he can hear her scrabbling about the bridge as she does so, trying to take the place of half a dozen bridge crew. “But it’s the only way. It’s the only way our daughter, you, our crew will survive. They’ll slaughter us Winston, they’ll slaughter all of us otherwise.”

There is a few moments of silence. He stumbles over to look at their daughter in her bassinet and suddenly, finally he realizes: he has a daughter.

“God, she’s beautiful.” It is half breathe, half prayer.

It strikes him that this is the last conversation he will have with his wife. He hits the ship’s com. “She’s beautiful.” he says again.

He can hear his wife’s smile “Isn’t she?”

“She has you ears.”

“And her daddy’s eyes.”

He realizes that the odd whirling sound in the back of the com signal, behind all the static, is the proximity alarm for the Enterprise. His heart clinches and to reassure himself he scoops his baby girl up in his arms. “What’ll we name her?” he asks, because anything is better then that sound. He tries to tease, “How about Boudica, after you mom?” Her response is exactly as he expects.

“Ugh, no, Boudica! Not Boudica, that’s horrible.” She pauses. “Let’s name her Jaime, after you mom.”

“Jaime?” he wonders to himself. He looks down at his daughter “Jaime Kirk. I like it.”

“Jaime Kirk” Georgia agrees. There‘s a beat, a moment of near silence.

“Winston?”

He can hear the proximity alarm going faster, louder. He knows what’s coming. “I love ya babe.’

“I love you. I love you both. Oh god I ...” there is an explosion  and just like that the coms go dead. All is static.

Winston thinks his heart might have stopped the same time hers did. He wonders if it will beat ever again.

And then he finally breaks and slides to floor weeping. His daughter has already been crying from some time, frightened by the explosions and the sorrow that comes off the people all around her like waves. He curls his body around her tiny form and just weeps. He will not be moved to do otherwise.

“Georgia Kirk was a Captain for seventeen minutes”  The challenge falls from Captain Pike’s lips into Jaime’s lap, “think you can do better?”

Author’s Notes:

1. Jaime Boudica Kirk. Why Boudica? I am a firm believer in the idea that names should mean things. James Tiberius Kirk is named after several kings of England as well as a great Roman General. I wanted to keep the idea of James/Jaime because A: part of the challenge and B: they mean the same thing which is supplanter. So why Boudica instead of Tiberia or Tiffany or some such? Tiberius was a truly talented general, expanding the Roman Empire by a notable margin. I struggled to find a feminine analog in my mind that made sense and then I realized “You dummy, you don’t HAVE to hold to the initials.” and then it totally opened up for me “Boudica, duh.” Boudica was a queen of the Iceni who lead her people against the might of Rome and specifically the General Nero. Hell of a lady, look her up.

2: Yes I realize that Georgia’s medical condition should have kept her from executing her duties and the medical officer in charge should have said something. However, if they had we would have no story so go with it yeah?

3. I think Georgia Kirk might be a little bit Slayer, in my head.
