Name: Aigis.
Canon: Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3.
OU/AU: Alternate.

History: In 1999, a series of battle robots were manufactured to combat the mysterious and dangerous beings known as Shadows. Aptly, units were named "Anti-Shadow weapons", and were built in the form of humans, in order for their Artificial Intelligence to allow them to wield the even more mysterious power of "Persona" -- physical manifestations of a living being's psyche. One such of these Anti-Shadow weapons was given the name "Aigis".

When the powerful, but fragmented, Shadow of the 13th Arcana, Death, escaped from the laboratory in which experiments on them were being conducted to bring about Nyx, and the end of humanity, Aigis hunted it down to the Moonlight Bridge, where they battled. However, Aigis knew that she would lose and so she resorted to a desperation tactic; she sealed Death inside of a young boy who was standing nearby, where his parents' car had just crashed. This way, Death could not regain its true, full form unless it managed to reunite with its other twelve fragments -- large and powerful Shadows, each with its own of the first 12 Arcana.

Shortly after the battle, Aigis was forced to shut down in order to repair the damage done to her system, and she was shipped back to the facility in which she was manufactured, located in Yakushima. Her fellow weapons -- her "sisters" -- had all been destroyed in the battle against the Shadows, and so Aigis became the last remaining Anti-Shadow weapon.

Within the next ten years, two important events occurred that would have an effect on just how the story would play out; the boy Aigis had sealed Death inside of switched places and roles in a deal with the fragmented form of Death -- Pharos -- and instead became the sealed form of Death; meanwhile, Ryoji Mochizuki, the full-fledged human representation of Death, took the boy's place as an ordinary orphan, housing the Shadow of the 13th Arcana within him. Neither retained any memory of this deal, and Ryoji Mochizuki, at the age of seventeen, returned to the boy's original hometown, Iwatodai, where he began to attend Gekkoukan High School and joined S.E.E.S, a group of Persona-users dedicated to fighting Shadows.

Aigis did not reawaken until that very year, 2009, when Ryoji Mochizuki and his fellow S.E.E.S members went to Yakushima for a brief vacation. She broke out of the facility, with some of her important circuits fried and thus most of her memory data missing -- including the battle of 1999 and her "purpose" -- and began searching for someone who she could not remember, but believed that she needed to find.

She was found on the beach by Ryoji, Junpei Iori and Akihiko Sanada on their "mission" of flirting with cute girls along the beach. Stunned by her beauty, they all attempted to get her affections, but each of them was shot down with her simple statement of, "You are not the one that I am looking for." After Ryoji's attempt, she left, but was followed by him.

Once he had reached and managed to stop her, she found that while he was not "the one", there was something strange about him, and he was someone that was important to her in some way; she then vowed to stay by his side and always protect him. Aigis returned to Iwatodai with Ryoji and the others, and was assigned to battle Shadows alongside S.E.E.S due to her more than capable abilities. Once summer break finally ended, she also requested to begin attending Gekkoukan High School, in order for her to remain by Ryoji's side.

It didn't take long for the beginning of all disasters to start.

After the defeat of the 12th fragment of Death, Shuji Ikutsuki, Chairman of S.E.E.S, reprogrammed Aigis to lure the members of S.E.E.S into the mysterious Shadow's tower, Tartarus, and there she restrains them all, mindlessly following his orders. He explains his true plans -- to call forth the Shadow of the 13th Arcana, Death, and bring about the end of mankind -- and commands Aigis to sacrifice S.E.E.S in order to awaken it. However, upon facing Ryoji, Aigis realises that she cannot bear to harm him, especially not after her promise to protect him, and fights back against her reprogramming. It is thanks to this that they are able to defeat Ikutsuki.

And then, she "first" encountered Minato Arisato.

Despite Ryoji's dismissals, Aigis continuously insisted to him that the silent boy was "dangerous", and that he should not be trusted. This was seen simply as her being overprotective of Ryoji, and the members of S.E.E.S all befriended Minato with only the exception of Aigis. Nothing seemed to support her suspicion of him, and even she began to relax around him a bit -- up until the night when she approached him on the Moonlight Bridge, and finally recalled him as the boy she had sealed Death inside of ten years ago.

They battled, the same way Aigis had with the original form of Death, and once again -- without an available desperation move to fall back on -- she failed to defeat him, and her system crashed, her body shattered.

Aigis was repaired for the second time, by the Kirijo Group, and briefed on the situation of Minato and the Fall before she returned -- but when she went to return home, she instead found herself dropped onto a small floating island and ushered onto a train by a computerised voice.

Welcome to Bubblevoid, Aigis.

Personality: Primarily, Aigis is nothing more than a robot, extremely advanced AI or otherwise, and as such, she begins as an emotionless, detached and mechanical character, seeing everything as a "mission" or a "duty". It is not until she has spent some months beside Ryoji and his friends that she begins to develop her own personality and emotions.

Aigis is a strong, determined character, but due to her lack of experience in the world, she often comes off to others as rather bizarre; she takes a child-like fascination and joy in learning about simple things, such as Japanese traditions or school, and is emotionally shattered should she fail something she sees as a "duty", at which point she will consider herself as nothing more than a machine that has failed its sole purpose in its existence. She is also quite oblivious to many nuances of human behaviour, meaning that she does not understand reasoning behind what appear to be illogical actions -- not to mention that nearly all jokes or pick-up lines go completely over her head.

When it comes to her personality around others, she begins as blank and neutral, which can often drive people away with its inhuman feel; once she recognises a person as her friend, she is much more open and kind, as well as protective, treasuring the few of those that are close to her. She is relentless against her enemies, and should she suspect that a person is not to be trusted for any reason, she is firm in her insistence and does not like to have that person near her friends.

Regarding herself, at most times, Aigis does not seem to think anything much; she sees herself as a machine with a job to do, and nothing more, and does not seem to care much for her physical state if it means she is fulfilling a part of her purpose; this is also indicated in her battle style, which mostly involves reckless attacks that use up her HP, and she will use down to the bare minimum of her health in order to attack. It is not until later that she begins to acknowledge her want to live and stay beside Ryoji and her friends, not as a duty, but as her own will.

Even with her possession of her own will and personality, Aigis' mechanical, robotic side is still near-constantly present in everything she does and says, and remains a part of the character herself.

Abilities: As an Anti-Shadow weapon, Aigis is built to function during the Dark Hour (while normal machinery would usually turn off, and normal people would 'Transmogrify' into coffins), and she is equipped with various battle functions; namely, the ability to summon the Persona Palladion, and to shoot rapid-fire bullets from her fingertips (or, alternatively, attach a launcher to her arm in place of a hand). Her Persona-summoning ability is built into her system, and so she does not require an Evoker to summon it.

She has inhuman, but not super-powered, strength and speed, as well as defence due to the specialised armour that attaches to her body. She is able to access any information that was programmed into her, just as one would do with a computer; the main example of this is when she mentioned that she had checked the 1999 maps of a nearby area that indicated an underground abandoned military base, which were installed into her as data.

Aigis is also capable of something known as 'Orgia Mode'. This is when she disables her limiter, thus increasing her attack power and speed significantly -- however, in this state, she is unable to defend herself, and can only attack, and additionally, her system overheats rather quickly during it and she requires a cool-down period after only a short while, during which she will be completely immobile.

Possessions: ... Nothing, really. Her "clothes" are attached to her body. She has a big red ribbon! And a few extra rounds of ammunition for her weapon, which is a powerful hand-unit gun.

⎛SAMPLE⎠

It was only her third day of attending Gekkoukan High School, and Aigis had already mastered the system.

Students would arrive early in the morning, in order to receive the optimal level of education based on the amount of time given to learn. They would sit through a set number of different classes, with specific teachers designated to each subject. A student's popularity amongst his classmates would increase should he correctly answer a question asked by the teacher.

Lunch was the break assigned for students to relax, eat and "hang out" during. It was clearly the favoured time of the day for most students, as they returned to classes extremely reluctantly. From what she understood, following the end of the school day, there were a number of activities that were typical to partake in; extracurricular clubs, studying, and more "hanging out" seemed to be the most routine choices.

End data collection.

At lunch that day, however, whilst sitting on the roof of the school with Yukari, Fuuka, Junpei and Ryoji, it suddenly occurred to Aigis that there was one thing she still did not fully grasp, and it was picking at her in quite an irritating way.

So, determined and curious as ever to learn, Aigis turned and touched Yukari's arm lightly to catch her attention.

The girl turned to her mid-speech, surprised. "... Uh. Yes, Aigis?"

"Yukari-san," she began bluntly, noting the way that both Ryoji and Junpei stopped talking with each other, waiting to hear her question. "I do not understand. What is the primary purpose of a 'date'?"

She was confused by the reactions of her friends to the simple question; Junpei's jaw dropped, Fuuka squeaked, Ryoji swallowed a mouthful of rice whole and began spluttering incoherently, and even Yukari flushed a brilliant shade of red -- which perplexed Aigis even more, because to her knowledge, Yukari was not ill, and therefore was embarrassed by the question.

"Um." Yukari coughed nervously under Aigis' unwavering stare. "Why do you want to know something like that...?"

"I am curious," she replied simply, failing to see how such a question could be considered taboo. "It has been requested of me a total of five times since I began attending Gekkoukan High School."

"What?!"

The startled yelp of the group was emphasised by Ryoji, who actually jumped from the bench and accidentally knocked Junpei off the edge, who instinctively grabbed onto the boy's long scarf in an attempt to catch himself, and Ryoji ended up being strangled by the other's weight.

Aigis, who had already predicted the situation from the moment Ryoji began to stand, was already standing at his side, unwinding his scarf from around his neck before the girls could even blink.

"Five boys have approached me after school," she repeated neutrally. "Each has requested that I join them on a 'date'; however, I do not see the purpose of such an activity. Is it to have fun?"

"Well..." Fuuka bit her lip and fidgeted nervously with the hem of her dress. Aigis took mental note of the actions. "I-it is, I suppose, but... Usually, it's only for two people -- and it's much more... well, private, than what people do with all of their friends..."

Yukari watched her expression curiously. "Do you understand, Aigis?"

She nodded. "I see. The purpose of a 'date' is to have fun with others in a more intimate setting, in order to further relationships in the most ideal manner."

Junpei blinked, taking a moment to absorb the strange wording she had used. "Y-yeah," he said finally, amazed. "Wow, that was fast, Ai-chan. You're gettin' really good at this!"

"You didn't say yes to any of them, did you?" asked Yukari seriously, looking worried. Aigis shook her head.

"I did not. I declined all invitations that I was offered."

Ryoji eased into a relieved grin, wrapping his scarf back around his neck. "Well, that's good."

"Man," sighed Junpei, forcing himself up reluctantly with Ryoji's shoulder as his support. "Guess we should head back inside, huh? The bell's about to go, and we don't wanna get cursed by Mr. Edogawa or anything..." The others murmured their agreement, gathered their things and stood, but as they reached the door, Aigis suddenly spoke up from the middle of the group.

"I have come to the conclusion that we should all go out on a 'date'."

Everyone paused.

Yukari was the first to speak, shifting awkwardly and turning to give Aigis an incredulous stare. "You want the five of us... to go on a date together?" she repeated slowly. "Uh, Aigis, that's... not really how dates work, y'know..."

"Why not?" asked Aigis blankly. "It is the ideal method to 'get to know' another, is it not? And, as I have learnt previously, fun is better experienced with a larger group of attendance. I do not understand why we cannot all go on a 'date' together."

"Well, that's all true, but-- I mean-- ugh, forget it," she sighed, and rolled her eyes. "You know what? Sure. Why the heck not. We just finished exams, so it's not like we've got to study or anything. You guys up for a quintuple date?"

"Heck yeah!" shouted Junpei, linking arms with Ryoji, who cheered his approval. Fuuka nodded happily on Yukari's other side, and Aigis gave a nod of her own.

"Then, it is settled. Following school today, our objective is to meet up on a 'date' at a set location."

There was a whoop of approval from the boys, and the girls giggled happily.

"Ooh, ooh! We should watch that horror movie marathon they're showing at Port Island Station!"

"W-what?! No way!"

"Scared, Yuka-tan?"

"N-no! I'll show you scared, Stupei! Fine. We can watch the dumb horror movies."

"Confirmed. Date location set to: Port Island Station."

"Can I sit next to you in the theatre, Aigis~?"

"You may. It allows me to continue to remain by your side in a currently unexplored location."

"Hey, can I sit on your other side, Ai-chan?!"

"Stupei, no! Ryoji-kun's bad enough!"

"H-hey!"

"Aw, c'mon, Yuka-taaaan!"

"Uhm... Maybe we should go inside, before we're late for class..."

They ended up half and hour late, and Mr. Edogawa cast a bad luck curse on them that would last throughout their reincarnation.
