Let There be the Light
They were perfect together, and they still were. But maybe, there were some unbearable changes happened lately, which tangled forever till the future, and everything would never be the same.
He opened his eyes only to find nothing but darkness. He rubbed his eyes, then closed it, and opened it again after a few moments. Still no different. Black was the only color he could see.
At first he thought that he just woke up in the middle of the night and there was something wrong with the lamp in the room or maybe someone forgot to turn the lamp on. But when he heard those birds outside started to chirp and he felt the warmth of the sunray on his skin, he knew that his eyes were that ‘something wrong’.
“You’re awake?”
He recognized this voice, better than anyone ever did. A very familiar voice which he would love to hear every day. It was Key. He could feel the slightly shorter boy shifting his body a little to sit on the edge of the bed. Minho unconsciously stretched his shaky hands everywhere, grazing around frantically to find any sign of his lover. He was trembling, he never used to this kind of darkness.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry I can’t do anything.”
He heard Key whispered silently, his voice was cracked, probably because of crying, he didn’t know exactly though, Key was not the type to cry easily. But he felt a pair of arms circling around his shoulder. Then he breathed in Key’s scent, he didn’t know why, but he found that it was soothing him a little, despite the fact that he was still surrounded by the darkness.
And it was the time when Choi Minho realized that he had lost his sight.
If he knew things would turn out like this, he would love to stare at Key’s face a little bit longer while he could.
------------------------------------------------------------
Let’s just say, Choi Minho, an aspiring, very handsome, talented drag racer in his early 20’s. He had already received many praises and great responds regarding his capability of being an amazing racer in spite of his young age. Winning two national level tournaments and becoming one of the most anticipated rising stars of the year, this competitive young man was really something. He succeeded to prove that he could save his spot on the top of his field. The interesting part was he also succeeded in his love life. Kim Kibum, or better known as Key, a passionate young man who was trying to pursue his dream to become the most formidable fashion consultant in Korea, was Minho’s loyal ex. partner in crime, which now turned out to be his lover.
Minho’s life as a racer prodigy and a lover at once was delightful, it was quite simple but full of bliss. He was happy enough, living in his small shared apartment with Key, spending his day by racing with adrenaline rushing through his veins, even if there were times when this life got cruel and he had to get along with the drift.
He could tell that his life was almost perfect, until the accident happened, forcing him to settle his dream down.
There was no way for a racer like Minho to proceed his career with his current condition. It was like musicians without their hearing, or singers without their voice.
------------------------------------------------------------
It took times for him to get used to this major change. Basically nothing was really changing except the fact that now, black had automatically become his favorite color, since that was the only thing he could see in his vision.
Obviously, Minho wasn’t blind by nature. That was why he often knocked his knees against the sharp edge of the furniture, painting his knees with dark blue and purple. But it turned out not really bad, as Key kissed every wound in the night and sent the pain away.
One day Key found him sprawled on the floor, tripping over something for the second time in just one single day, adding some other bruises on his body. When Key quickly brought himself to help him standing up, Minho just chuckled.
“I’d like to think that the massive number of wounds and bruises on my body proves nothing but integrity and masculinity.”
Kibum couldn’t help but chuckled as well hearing his words.
--------------------------------------------------------
They were laying their bodies on the bed one afternoon in summer day, staring at the ceiling while listening to each other’s heart beat.
Remember back in the day, at times like this Minho would have been busying himself in the garage, with a screwdriver in his right hand , metal wires and bolts scattered all around the place, black oil splattered on his muscular tanned arms and some on his face. He always loved tinkering with the engine of his bike, before Key walked in and started to interrupt with a suspicious grin plastered on his face.
Minho could portray the picture clearly in his mind, Key would copy all the things that he did, pretending to be a mechanic, then finally (this was his real intention from the beginning) smearing the oil on Minho’s face, just below his nose, drawing a thick fake moustache. And Key would laugh like crazy, mocking him as he looked like that classic Super Mario in the game they used to play when they were young.
It was annoying yet exciting.
Because if Minho was the Mario, Key promised that he would be the Luigi.
----------------------------------------------------------------
“Who’s there Key?”
Key immediately stopped chattering and turned his head to the direction where Minho’s voice came from. He saw Minho, cautiously yet hastily, approaching him while shifting his gaze to some random directions all over the place, as if it could help him to find his mate despite the fact that he was completely losing his sight.
“Who’s that guy with you?”
Minho asked, his voice was calm and steady, but tinged with a hint of jealousy.
“Ah I forgot to introduce him to you, this is Dongwoon.” Key said while gesturing his hand toward the blond guy beside him, even if he knew it didn’t make sense since Minho couldn’t see it.
“What is he doing here?”
“Nothing, we’re just talking about the fashion fair which will be held next week.”
“Then get him out of here.”
His voice was restrained, trying to suppress the burning hatred toward that Dongwoon guy.
“But-“
“Get him out of here, now!” Minho finally exploded, turning his body to the opposite direction.
Key couldn’t do anything but glancing at his friend apologetically while mouthing ‘sorry’ and quickly made his way toward his lover to soothe him.
And Dongwoon offered his smile and nodded understandingly before excusing himself.
There was really nothing between Key and Dongwoon except friendship and business relationship.
But losing something very important like his sight (and half of his dream) made Minho being over protective for the things that he still had. And Key was the most important one that he ever had.
----------------------------------------------------
It was a peaceful night until Key’s tentative laughter breaking the silence. Minho quietly watching him talking on the phone, as Key offered his enchanting voice to someone on the other line. And all Minho could hear at the moment was his own blood rushing in his ears.
He felt the rising of adrenaline was getting to take over him. Luckily he never heard of someone who died because of adrenaline abundance, or otherwise he was sure that he would die right away. Minho didn’t even know whether there was a correlation between his blindness and the sudden increase of adrenaline in his body, whether it was affecting the productivity of his adrenal gland or not. He didn’t know, he never took a biology class back then.
This fear of losing was freaking him out, it crept up, spreading into his spine.
“Minho, what-“
That was the last thing that Key could ever manage to say before Minho seized the phone from his hand and trailing a rain of kisses on any part of Key’s body he could reach.
---------------------------------------------------------------
“Key?”
The next morning he woke up with some droplets of cold sweat on his temple and all of the confusions stuck in his mind. He just had a nightmare, a very bad one, which he couldn’t fully remember. He shifted his body only to realize that his lover wasn’t there.
“Key? Where are you Key?”
He got up from his bed abruptly and ran out of their shared bed room.
“Answer me now! Key!”
Minho’s heart paced in unsteady rhythm, his hair dampened because of sweats. He was sure that if his boyfriend didn’t answer his call once again, he would break out right away and smashing his body against those cars on the street or just simply jumping from their balcony. Never, even just once, in his life he was this scarred. He was scarred that Key had left him. But fortunately, he didn’t have to do it because when he was about to shout his lover’s name again, the other boy suddenly approaching him, with a quite annoyed expression on his face, which was of course could never be able to be seen by Minho.
“No need to shout, I’ve heard it.”
“Then why don’t you answer me?” Minho retorted while trying his best to hide the tremble in his voice.
“Why would I? I was in the bathroom.” Key replied, a bit harsh, which he himself surprised that those words slipped out of his mouth easily.
And Minho seemed to notice it. Because for the next fifteen seconds, he kept his mouth closed, unable to say any word.
“Okay okay, fine, I’m sorry.” Key said with a faint hint of guilt in his voice.
“Well, you know… you’ve changed…”
Key said continued after a while because the taller boy still petrified on his current position, fidgeting on his words before finally blurting it out.
“I almost cannot recognize you…” He glanced down.
“Yes, I’ve changed. In case you don’t know, I have a major change in my life now, I’ve lost my sight!” Minho exclaimed, he didn’t even know why he became this sensitive.
“No, you don’t understand, It has nothing to do with that thing.” Key quickly said with his fist curled into a ball, trying to sound as polite as he could, resisting himself from retorting back.
“Yes it has, it must be has something to do with that fact. Now that I can’t see anymore, are you planning to leave me? With that Dongwoon guy or maybe anybody else? For your information I’m-“
“Just because you’re blind, it doesn’t mean that you can do anything as you wish!”
Key screamed at the top of his lungs. Panting hard. Finally he said it, the words that had been restrained to be spoken for these past few weeks. He had never shouted at Minho before, not even when they arguing against each other.
After adjusting his breath, he realized that he had done a fatal mistake. He closed his eyes and ran his hand to his head in frustration. Fingers intertwined against the hair. Seconds later he heard few taps of feet and a sound of their shared bed room’s door slamming closed.
-------------------------------------------------------------
“Look at me Minho.”
That was the first thing he said after he carefully stepped into the room. He found Minho sat on the edge of the bed, offering his back to Key.
“How can I?”
Minho snatched, a bit irritated by those words.
Key mentally cursed himself and slowly made his way toward Minho then finally knelt in front of him. He held Minho’s right hand and squeezed it lightly.
“Listen, I’m really sorry… I never meant to hurt you…”
Letting out a deep sigh, Minho cupped Key’s hand with his own.
“Never mind, and I’m sorry as well…”
“What for?”
“For shouting at you, for accusing some random things, and such.” He paused for a moment.
“And the things that you said were right after all. I’ve already crossed the line.”
“No need to apologize, I never mad at you.” Key stroked his arm lightly to assure him that he really meant it.
“Well, I mean, I’m blind, and stupid, and in love.”
“Don’t say such thing, what-“
“I’m blind, I’ve lost my sight and I’m okay with it. But you, If I lost you, I…. I don’t know what would I be, I don’t think I can live without my heart.” Minho said bitterly, palming his forehead in desperation.
For some gracious seconds Key was captivated. It was the first time in his life he knew that he had lost his words. He slowly got up and sat himself beside his lover.
“You won’t be. You won’t be blind anymore. I’ll be your eyes.” He said as he resting his head on Minho’s shoulder.
They didn’t know that actually, Key was blind as well. Even more blind than Minho.
And as for Minho, he was much more blind that he thought he was.
Because they wouldn’t say that love is blind for no reason.
Because when you fell in love, you wouldn’t see with your eyes anymore.
You would see with your heart.
