Hmmmm. Well, just out of ease on your part, don't read too much into what he says or you'll pull more from it that isn't necessary. But if he doesn't want to be in a relationship, then he doesn't. Unless he gives you more details (which he isn't) then just take it at face value

don't give up on the basement! you've worked too hard just to fill it back in with junk. that place could be a real cool hangout place, with or with out brandon! and don't worry, you're sad now but you'll feel better in a day or two. plenty of fish and all that, but the important thing is that it broke off sooner than later (ex. derek). avoid boyfriends for a few weeks and then get back up on the horse. and please avoid the cats: i'm allergic!!
