"I need to not think." He lifted another bale of hay and moved it again. When he put it down, he sat on it with a sigh. "It's been a hell of a few days." He shifted to the side a little and patted the spot next to him. "This is a little embarrassing, but..."

Hadn't he already embarrassed himself more than any one person should?

Savannah moved gracefully. Fluidly. No sooner was she invited than she'd moved in, turned, and sat.

And no sooner than she had sat down than Kon turned and wrapped his arms around her in a hug. "I am a bad friend. Worst ever, probably, and my best friend may not be speaking to me anymore. And my other best friend I just don't get. He's from the future and I just don't understand why..."

He shook his head. "No. No, mostly it comes down to: I suck."

"It sounds like you're being awfully hard on yourself," she pointed out gently. "If they're your best friends then, seems to me, you could get on to mending fences."

Or...maybe not. Maybe sometimes that wasn't possible.
