Hooray! My dear little bronze god is back from the shop. He had some problems with his start-up files, and they updated him to System Pack 2 (which apparently had never been done). More tweaking and optimizing and he seems to be doing okay so far, knock on wood ( Read more... )

He's actually only a year old - HP laptop, Pavilion dv5. Pretty swift little thing, all told. He only JUST got put to SP2 (even though I was told he was over six months ago, hmph).

What's SP3 do?

Oh! I'm not on XP. I'm on Vista (Home Premium, 64-bit). Is there an SP3 out for it?

The two things I can think of off the top of my head are: 1) Hermes has gotten dust buildup inside, which is blocking the vents (or cat hair - with two cats, I have to de-fur the computers fairly regularly) 2) Hermes' cooling fans aren't keeping up with the processor.

Did the tech check the hardware at all, or did he/she just fix the software problems plaguing you?

They just did software maintenance, no hardware.

It's possible there's dust inside, I just don't know if it's possible for me to clean this out on my own or what. The vents themselves don't look too dusty on the outside, but inside anything is possible.

Hewlett-Packard, right? Should have a little vent on one of the sides - likely gonna look like a bunch of slits on the side of the case with a copper piece right behind it. Take some compressed air and fire a few blasts into it. Just take care to use short blasts and to let the internal fan stop spinning between air usage and you should be fine.

And yes, a whirring sound when you do this is normal as you'll be spinning the fan. Do not worry about it. Just, uhhh... don't keep spraying when it happens or you'll spin the cooling fan into oblivion. I take no responsibility at this point. :>
