on my screen, they look chocolate. i remember my first pair of chuck highs...i bought them a 1/2 size too small because it's all they had and I JUST HAD TO HAVE THEM.

i have to admit that nike has really created some lovely eye candy since they bought the brand, but i'd feel pretty guilty about straying away from my standard dark blue highs (they fade so well).

Ahhhh! The satan Nike! You see how I don't keep up and I swore to god I'd never buy a pair of Nikes, because that's the OTHER preppy shoe I hated, what with their fucking color-coordinated-with-polos swooshes. Now I'm doomed, doomed I tell you, to the circle of hell reserved for people who don't keep vows!

Oh well. I will simply have to adjust to this new, painful knowledge. The blue high-tops are badass, exactly for the fade. Also a slightly scuffed pair of natural whites are killer.

natural whites: agreed.

ya know, i thought the Nike domination might be a grim plot spoiler, even though it's been a few years since it happened. you'd be surprised how many folks don't know. trust me, i'm not sure how i happened to not have my head up my ass when that news hit.

Egads -- I grew up in a very preppy 'burb (not by choice!) but never noticed that the swooshes were color coordinated like that. Ugh. We had plenty of boat shoes, no socks, and Jack Somethings that the cheerleaders wore.

I didn't discover Chucks until much later. I went through a Birkie phase, cause I was always more hippie than anything else.

Our history w/the chucks is identical - same time period, same ordering from the sports store in a tiny men's size. I was a fan of the high top but now I prefer the lo. The penny bit is great!

my 1998 pair finally died a few months ago. I remember buying my first pair in a men's tiny size when I was 14. low tops. but then through most of my teens I preferred high tops, went back to low tops in my late twenties...
