the only breathtaking place I've ever seen is here in the beautiful willamette valley. it's hard to beat.

There were some breathtaking sights as I drove across the country some years back. Colorado, Wyoming and Idaho were amazing.

the usa is such a beautiful and wondrous place, it's just that all the beauty is tucked away where you have to go looking for it.

If it snows, I want it to mean it. Not to just throw some flakes down into a black slush that disappears by 11AM. Let's trudge through a foot of it and have to shovel it.

Be careful what you wish for! :-p

When do you leave? I haven't sent out the e-mail yet, but I've been meaning to invite a few folks to dinner on Tuesday to celebrate my birthday. Please tell me you'll be around. If not, we must get together before you leave. I have things for you.

Get better pronto!

Oh, don't worry. I'm leaving for Ireland at the end of the month, Turkey in February, and Oz sometime in April. Next Tuesday you say?

Michigan winters, especially those over the last 10-15 years or so, have been very, very unpredictable---we have our snowstorms every once in a while but you never know what you're going to get from week to week. Last week it went up into the 60s(F, of course) for a few days, then it got super windy, and now a week later there's not a LOT of snow but enough to make driving kind of dangerous. And whatever the weather, Detroit could hold its own pretty well in a Most Gray & Depressing City In The World competition. It's not something inherent in this part of the country, either; I've worked with people from Wisconsin and Minnesota who would complain all the time about how cloudy it is here.

I won't miss any of it much when I leave here next month.

That's an entry unto itself though, to be written...soon.

oh i'm so glad i'm not there anymore. Detroit is indeed of the large cities in the US, is the 2nd cloudiest... 2nd only to Seattle. But Seattle is NOT depressing... Detroit IS.

Anyway... the best winter I spent in Detroit was because I was in Western Australia for 3 weeks in the winter... I got my dose of UV and Vitamin D and always sunny.... I got very close to burning WITH sunblock- and I aint white so that takes a bit.

I totally empathize what you're going through... hang in there! I'd totally send you a sunlamp if I can.... tanning salons?
