MOAR COMPUTAR CRAP - plz to provide opinion

OK so. I keep hunting and hunting, trying to find deals, and a lot of times I get back that I should really actually seriously consider Dell. Brian got his laptop AND previous PC from there, they seem solid enough, and apparently now and then they get nice deals and the whatnot. I got frustrated with them personally because of the high cost of ( Read more... )

Why are you dropping cash for Office07? I can't think of anything that it does that can't be replicated either via GoogleDocs or Open Office, outside of VBscript macros.

Also, you didn't mention your OS. Was going to mention something about memory limits, but it seems even 32bit XP can handle 4 gigs of RAM.

Regarding your graphics card, I did some quick googling and pulled up the first review I saw, from 2007.

This card is not meant for computer users who plan to play lots of 3D games. The video card lacks the muscle needed for high-end titles currently on the market. As such I opted to not test the ATI Radeon HD 3450 with video games. This card is aimed at use in basic work stations and home theater computers.

No idea what you're planning to put this machine through in terms of gaming or 3d processing, but it sounds like it could be better.

I did a build, over on their small business side that. Slightly slower processor speed, no Office, a wireless modem and highly superior graphics card, for about $12 more than the one you linked.

Basically, I just customized a studio mini-basic.

Need Office for compatibility with Brian's computer - we share a lot of docs. I'd just get Works, but the fuckers put Excel in Office, which I need. Also, having a more solid working knowledge of products used in jobs I'm applying for would help. Especially since MS done fucked up their goddamn formatting with the new editions. GRR.

Basically, while I'd like to play more powerful games in the future, that's not my current goal: right now my goals are to get NWN2 going and work in Unreal 3. As they're both older and less demanding titles, I figure I can get away with slightly wimpier settings. As I get more funding, I can acquire a better card.

OS is 64-bit Vista, btw. Derp, forgot to list that... heh.

Altho I don't have Office 2007, I would argue that it's totally worth it with a new computer purchase. Dealing with conversion to other software--even older versions of Office--is a total pain in the ass.

And by all accounts it's pretty spiffy.

Unfortunately, I have no opinions on computers re: games that aren't Starcraft.

That video card is a few years old one, and as someone else pointed out you could get a much better one very cheaply. I'd suggest at least getting one with 512Mb RAM on it, that'll choke on some current games.

Other than that it looks all good. A particularly good price if it includes office!
