Well, the thing about English teaching is that it really ISN'T a very good "career" -- I mean, I don't really see it going anywhere in most cases.

It's funny because I see it as "English teaching jobs basically will pay 250,000 yen per month for working 40 hours a week" and never much more or much less, but I suppose there are other perspectives to take on it :)

Okay, that may be true, especially since I have a CS degree and all, but still, when I'm having trouble finding any work at all, and bills have to be paid (and a family has to be supported), if I can do something that is fun and pays all the bills, that is great. I can't sit around looking for work that will provide a better career while the rest of my family is starving.

Mind you, I've leaped between IT and teaching/nursery school caretaker before. I am concerned about the long term effects, ever moreso that I am 33, but even so, most of these IT jobs which I thought would provide me with a career went under or screwed the employees over or otherwise cut everyone's career short anyways, regardless of the quality or quantity of work or our efforts.

/me is pretty jaded with the whole IT field right now, don't mind him too much.

Working in IT at a foreign company may really be the way to go, then :)

I think it depends in both situations. There's a career to be had in both, but IT is riskier with potentially higher rewards.

It's true English teaching is a nice steady gig. If you go back to it, it _will_ pay the bills.
