Cancun! So... What do we do?

Some of you may have heard that Laura and I are heading to Cancun for our anniversary. Yay!

I've never been to Cancun before, but some of you have. So far, we have tickets to chicken itza, which oddly enough has always been a dream of mine. What else should we do? What have you guys done there which you would recommend?

I suspect no one who knows you *really* finds that odd. ;-)

I went to Cancun with a friend and her family in high school, so while I won't be much help with the adult side of things, I enjoyed Chichen Itza and you must snorkel. Renting a car and driving through poorer villages was eye-opening, and I was happy to practice speaking Spanish after taking the first year class.

Mostly, it's variations on the twenty-something party scene. It's all differently the same, etc. etc. Copious amounts of alcohol, bad dancing, low-stakes gambling, and all the usual pheromone games. If you have a preference when it comes to that sort of thing, you'll find a way to indulge it.

Chichen Itza is freaking awesome. I recommend reading up ahead of time and come prepared with interesting shadow-position experiments to play with. Also, climbing it is fun, but the steps are narrow, and you get unexpectedly dizzy coming back down. Heh, "Tombs & Treasure" was one of my favorite games back in the day, so seeing Chichen Itza was definitely a dream of mine, too.

Also remember that outside of the touristy areas, you have a big target sign painted on you. And, of course, those are the places most interesting to me. Perhaps to you, as well.

I second the snorkeling comment, and add in that SCUBA and watersports (of the non-gross variety) are top-notch there.

Enjoy! :)

Go swimming in a cenote. Drink the local rum.

Personally I'd go for Coba or Uxmal before Chichen Itza, but YMMV.

I'm very jealous.
