Some time ago, I was contacted by Sunplay and they sent me their award-winning sunscreen to try! Why me? Beats me but i was more than happy because i use sunscreen daily & i have been doing so since i was in my teens. Do you know that exposure to the sun can cause premature skin aging which manifests itself on your face/body in the form of wrinkles?!? If that doesn't scare you enough, continued and over-exposure to UVA/UVB rays can also cause skin cancer! *gasp*
(Perhaps this accounts for why i look younger than my age? Hee...)
Anyway, i opened the package eagerly and found this!
Sunplay Super Block, SPF 130/PA+++
Initially i was skeptical when I saw the SPF listed on the package --- 130?!!??? Reeaallllyyy?? I use a SPF of at least 30 daily and even then, i still get a few freckles here and there. However, i decided to read the press release in detail and my interest got piqued.
First of all, Sunplay belongs to the ROHTO-Mentholatum group which is 122 years old! Any company that can survive for over a century surely must be doing something right! Secondly, it's a Japanese company and practically everyone knows the high quality that can be expected from a Japanese product.
And then, the more i read, the more awed i was by all the science that went into this little bottle of sun protection. It has now been improved with with a patented technology known as SOLAREX-3 and fights 3 signs of sun damage -- sunburn, skin aging and dryness.
I didn't know that dryness is a sign of sun damage so I learnt something new. No wonder this sunscreen contains the popular Hyaluronic Acid which keeps skin moisturised and plump. Check out the list of ingredients below --
Now, let's see how this sunscreen holds up against its claim of the "ultra light, non-greasy" formulation which is "smooth on skin". I squeezed a bit out of the bottle to test on the back of my hand and out flowed this white runny fluid, which i then spread out using my fingers.
Post application, this is what my hand looks like.
There's no white cast which is good! However, i didn't like the scent -- it has the typical smell of sunscreens and i didn't like that. Imagine smelling it the entire day if i had applied it to my face. It has this really weird chemical smell but i liked that it spreads easily due to its watery texture. Upon application, it felt sticky. Since alcohol wasn't high on the list of ingredients, it didn't turn matte or dry quickly.
5 minutes later, i took another photo of this hand --
This is when this sunscreen lets me down and didn't live up to my expectations. It was still slightly sticky to the touch and the chemical smell was still strong! In fact, there was a slight dewy finish to my hand which i didn't really fancy as i like my sunscreens matte. However, if you like the dewy look, then you may seriously consider this sunscreen and just pat some powder on to tackle the slight stickiness.
Sounds like i wasn't very impressed right? However, the million-dollar question is -- Would I still purchase this sunscreen???
Yes! Why??
1) The high SPF protection means this would work wonders for my very fair & easily burnt skin when i'm at the beach or at outdoor events.
2) I wouldn't mind the chemical scent on my body. Just not my face!
3) The small bottle makes it very handy! Check out the size in the photo below.
In fact, i would highly recommend this to beach bunnies or those who are looking for a high level of sun protection. Sunplay has many other products which are readily available in stores and i'm curious about that new watery cool one (in blue)!
