Summary: Wally is worried about getting Dick the perfect gift. Alfred reassures him, he already has it.
Alfred smiled to himself. It seemed no matter how many years older Mr. Wallace turned, he would always remain that shy boy.
"If I may, Mr. Wallace, you are overreacting," Alfred said gently.
Wally flushed an even brighter red. Two hours ago, Alfred opened the door to find skittish Wally. For you see, Master Richard's eighteenth birthday was coming up and Wally had arrived at the Manor looking for advice on a present.
"But Alfred!" Wally exclaimed. "I don't know what to get him!"
Alfred highly doubted that. He had watched Master Richard and Mr. Wallace grow up over the past seven years. Alfred believed there was no one else in the world that knew Master Richard as well as Mr. Wallace did. Well except perhaps for Master Bruce.
"I'm sure you do. What was your original choice?"
Wally fell silent. Then he slowly he reached into his pocket and laid a pair of crumbled Haley Circus tickets on the table. Wally didn't meet Alfred's eyes and proceeded to ramble. "He's always told me so many stories about his time at the circus. But after I had bought the tickets, I thought that was insensitive because I know he hasn't been back there since his parents died. It's just he's always so happy when he speaks of those times and Ijustwanthimtobehappy!"
Alfred’s gaze softened. “I think it’s a wonderful gift, Mr. Wallace.”
“Do you really?”
Alfred nodded. He is quite sure that if had been anyone else beside Mr. Wallace, Master Richard would reject the gift. However, he knew the way Mr. Wallace looked at Master Richard and knew the way Master Richard would often look back.
“If you say so Alfred,” Wally said, feeling a little more confident. It was then that he saw the time. “Ah crap,” he swore. “I was supposed to meet Dick at his school in five minutes. I gotta go! See you Alfred!”
He was gone in a flash. After Wally had vanished from sight, Alfred smiled. He made a note to himself that the next time Mr. Wallace came over, that Alfred should sit the boy down to have a talk about his “feelings” towards Master Richard. He would like to see great grandchildren in his future eventually.
“Ah, yes that’s right,” Alfred said, pounding his fist into his hand. “I must inform Master Bruce that he needs to change his gift.” He paused for a moment. “Or perhaps we should make it a family event as I don’t think Master Bruce is use to words “Master Richard” and “date” in the same sentence yet.”
