Ahem! Because they were designed by engineers from Britain, who followed the width of railroads in Britain, which had been conquered by Rome way back when, whose carts created ridges in the ground as Romans repeatedly travelled using the same paths, who wanted to tie two horses to pull each cart, which consequently was built to accomodate the width of two horses' asses.
